Henry Fortner
By Bob Bilyeu
In the choir room at South Haven Baptist Church where I was the minister of music for thirty-five years is a beautiful plaque honoring members who have passed away. It is called the Henry Fortner Honor Roll. We named it after Henry because of his faithfulness to the choir. He almost never missed a rehearsal or a service. Henry did have one problem though he couldn't sing. He got the words right but his entrances, cutoffs and his pitch were at the best random. He wasn't sure if he were a tenor or a bass, so he sat between the two sections. We had hoped this would keep him from getting either section off their part. It often, in fact, got both parts off. read more> >

Front Porch
1959
By Stan Hitchcock

Next year will mark my 50th year in music. It seems a lifetime ago, and I guess it really is.

I got out of the Navy in 1958 and moved back to my hometown of Springfield, Missouri in the heart of the Ozarks. My Uncle Bob Johnson was Pastor of Seminole Baptist Church in Springfield and my family and I started attending about every Sunday. Brother Bob introduced me to a family of young college students that had formed a gospel singing group called "The Waymakers". I say family because everyone in the group, except one, was related. They were the Bilyeu family from way down in the Ozark Mountains and upon hearing them sing for the first time……I wanted to sing with them. read more> >

A Special Gift
By Ronnie Reno
L-R Ronnie Reno, Mary Doub, Gabrielle Gray, Kitsy Kuykendall, Mike Lawing

One of the highlights of the IBMA convention held here in Nashville on Oct.1st was when I presented some of my Dad's and Red's memorabilia to the International Bluegrass Music Museum. I am very proud of the fact that Don Reno and Red Smiley are in the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. I was able to give the museum some more of the personal treasure's that I have of Dad's and Red's. I presented them some old posters that I have saved of the band back in the middle 50's. What was so great was that they used them as cue cards while doing TV shows. They would write down songs that they didn't know and the floor producer would hold them up beside the camera while they would sing them live on their "Top Of the Morning" TV show. I was also able to give them Red's dog tags from WWII and some old pictures of them along with a tie clap of Red's and some cuff links of Dad's.

If you ever get the chance please go by and visit the IBMM in Owensboro KY. and tell them Ronnie sent you by,
