Starving Artists and Hillbilly Singers
I've been sketching, drawing and painting ever since I was making stick people on paper when I was about 4 years old. As a kid growing up I would
find myself looking at some scene and in my mind, sketching it. Sometime later, I noticed that when I did this I would actually move my finger as if I were tracing the picture. So, I became a fantasy painter in my mind. In High School I
became the cartoonist for the Pleasant Hope school paper. I guess, really, I became an would-be artist, before I even started singing and playing guitar at age 12. In 1959, the year after I got out of the Navy and returned home to the
Ozarks, I helped my Uncle Bob Johnson start the Good Samaritan Boys Ranch and he asked me to sketch, with pen and ink, his dream of how the Ranch would look someday. So, as he described it, I drew it and it became the guide to our
building for the Ranch for homeless boys.

Welcoming A New Member to the Reno Family

Henderson Guitar, #505 |
On June 19th my band and I went up to Mouth of Wilson, VA to spend the day with a friend of mine and play a little music. It was the 16th Annual Wayne Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition at the Grayson Highlands State Park.
While there, Wayne presented me with a custom built, Henderson Guitar, #505. Wayne Henderson is one of the greatest Luthier's in the United States and is renowned for building guitars and mandolins.
On average it takes Wayne 10 years to build a custom guitar, but it is well worth the wait! It took Eric Clapton 9 years to receive his first Henderson Guitar, in fact they wrote a book called Clapton's Guitar in 1994. I was fortunate to
be able to get mine sooner and I was also lucky to get one of the greatest sounding guitars in the world. I have some of the oldest and greatest sounding instruments in the business and this one is definitely in that category.
I had Wayne copy my 1934 D-28 Herringbone Martin with the forward bracing and the neck shaped in a C fashion. He also put the abalone inlay around the front and around the sound hole using Brazilian Rosewood on the back. Check out
Wayne's website for more info about this wonderful builder.
It is said that it's hard to find a Henderson Guitar because once you get one you never sell it. I have to agree!
Once again let me thank Wayne Henderson for building me this treasure and thank him for being a true American Artisan.

The Last Of Summer Panic
by Denise Hitchcock
Drawing by Denise Hitchcock |
What did you do this summer? By third grade you knew that was going to be the first drawing, essay or speech assignment of the school year. Before fifth grade I got a head start by living a summer narrative of how each trip to the city
pool could be a thrilling submission. (I probably wasn't normal.) There were some years I genuinely did exciting stuff, A+ paper stuff! But more often then not, summer was boring as a kid and just hot as a grown up. But as we come to
Labor Day, the official end of summer holiday, I still ask myself "What did you do this summer?"
Let's see? I…
…grew a garden filled with tomatoes, peppers and squash. Then tried recipes using my home-grown bounty (Two are in the newsletter's recipe section),
…read a classic book in an outdoor chair (Classic – any book already in your library and remember fondly),
…road in my little red convertible with the top down,
…swam with my grandchildren (I can make a bigger splash than they can!),
…caught fireflies and put them in a big jar with holes in the top (letting them go before dawn),
…laughed with my mother about silly stuff (never take anything too seriously),
And I drew a picture for extra credit….
