End of the Road Season
2 Cycle U coaches & high-level racers reflect on the year past

From the Dean...

Honest work. These days with the economy blowing up and the prospect of finally living within our means on the horizon, the time for honest rebuilding of our assets and communities is at hand. Honesty is one of the first things that drew me to cycling. I would ride with college roomates in 1982 and it was clear I was out of shape and there was no arguing that they were better than me. Honest feedback. I kept at it and improved and by honest hard work and dedication I was soon faster and able to ride with them. That hooked me, the idea that if I put in the time and rode that pretty soon I was faster and by the end of my 2nd year riding we did the STP in one day and I was amazed at how far my honest work had taken me, 200 miles in one day!

I have new riders ask me this question all the time "I want to race and do well my first year, how do I do it?" I love to tell them about the honesty of cycling. If they ride hard and are dedicated they will do well. The positive cycle of riding gives you good results: in how you feel, sleep, eat, and perform. You start to see the correlation to food you eat and how you ride. You see the connection between how you take care of your body and bike and how it works. You get honest feedback. Training gives you a guananteed honest return.

I love cycling for it's honesty, what you put in is what you get out. If you work hard you will get faster. This time of year it is great to remember what happend during the season and consider what you want to do next year. Unlike the economy or your IRA portfolio your training gives you a guaranteed road map to achieving your goals. With honest work you will build your fitness, get faster and feel great, and that is something you can take to the bank.

Spin to win,

Craig Undem

Head Coach

P.S. It was great to see teammates and friends at our first annual end of season BBQ and ride, check out some pics here and we are pumped to bring you the best InCycle yet beginning in November!

High Pass Challenge is all that…and a bag of Chips!

The 2nd Annual CBC's High Pass Challenge (HPC) was Sunday, September 7. HPC should stand for "Hurt, Pain, and Cramp"…because I did. This ride is epic, and you should put it on your to do list for 2009. 114 miles, 7,500+ feet of climbing…ouch.

I went into the HPC with no expectations. It's been a few years since I've done a Cascade event, so why not end the season with a moderate climb up St. Helens. I think there's a tendency to assume all Cascade rides resemble STP or Chilly Hilly. The High Pass Challenge is a different ‘animal'. It's a climb and it ain't moderate.

"Go!" We rolled out of the parking lot at 7:27am, 27 minutes behind 98.9% of the riders. I figured on catching riders in matter of miles, a stiff tailwind and a chewy cup of Folders would activate in a couple of miles…wrong. 10 miles into the flat, perfect pavement warm up and there was no one in sight. Did we miss a turn, or are the other riders "bring'n it" early in the day? They were bring'n it...alot. If you've managed to sweat through your leg warmers in the first 10 miles of a ride, you know it's going to be along day. Finally, a rider, another one, and we catch a group of three. Ok, things are starting to settle in, sweaty leg warmers and all. "Is this a food stop? No, it's an AM/PM…" Really, I was hungry and out of water at the "St. Helens…left" sign…that's not good. I knew it was coming. I knew we were about to climb. Maybe if I ignore the St. Helens sign it'll all go away. I'll keep riding straight. Straight on the road to Happy Town. Nope, we turned left…what now???

What now is a beautiful, well managed, well supported climb, for cyclists of all levels and abilities. On the High Pass Challenge, you'll climb some of the most scenic roads in the Northwest. You'll be amazed when you peer into the lava dome. You'll test your endurance on the way up, and your nerve on the way down (you can't go 45mph on the Burke Gilman…not recommended). You will also test your patience on the 20+ miles of chip seal in the last 32 miles of the ride. By the way Chuck, the last 32 miles are not flat, they're rolling hills. Just what the body needs at the end of the day.

Regardless of the chip seal and rolling hills, Cascade's High Pass Challenge is the ‘real deal'. It's on my calendar for 2009. You will definitely earn that Gold, Silver, or Bronze metal. You will also earn that Polish sausage with a bag of chips!

Ride Safe,

Larry Kemp Junior Camp was a huge success!

In the early part of this summer WSBA's Trish Lawrence approached Cycle U wanting to know if any of the coaches would be interested in teaching a 4 day junior cycling camp in Cle Elum WA. Without hesitation Coach Kristi Berg and Toby Swanson jumped on the opportunity and took on being the head coaches for the camp. The idea was that they would help write up the curriculum and help run the clinic by coaching and teaching the skills involved with all aspects of cycling.... ( Click HERE to read more).
Cycle U's "Big Dawgs" Reflect on the 2008 Season

And Thus Ends the Year, Almost.

by Coach Dan Harm -

In two days I leave to the final race of the season. To be honest, I debated for a long time about even going. Yes, this may seem surprising considering the race happens to be Elite Track National Championships, an event at which I have excelled at every year. After much contemplation I decided to make the plunge, book my plane ticket, and hope for the best.... ( CLICK HERE to read more).

The End-of-Season Review
by Coach Lang Reynolds

Of the 90 days separating the beginning of July from the end of September, I was home for just over ten of them. I raced in Oregon, Colorado, California, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, the District of Columbia, and of course Washington itself. Of the 20+ days of racing over the last three months, I didn't win a single race, and I haven't placed in the top 10 since March. It's been a frustrating season. I'm a Cat 1 trying to get a rofessional contract, and while this much travel and racing is not strictly necessary in the quest to obtain a contract, I thought it was the best thing to do at the time....
