Strong, smart and bold Girls Inc. Members

Dear Friends of Girls Inc.,
Happy New Year!
It's hard to believe, but 2008 marks Girls Inc. of NW Oregon's 10th anniversary! I am so proud of this organization, my staff, and--of course--the girls. Over the past ten years we've served more than 10,000 girls throughout the Portland metro area! It's only January and 2008 already shows exceptional program highlights:

  • Girls Inc. now serves 19 elementary, middle, and high schools across the metro area
Our strong, smart and bold programming continues to expand throughout the region to three new sites in Multnomah County, including one hosted at our headquarters and open to all Portland-area girls.

  • The Associates Mentoring Program launches four new sites: REI, PGE, Recess Fitness, and CH2M Hill
Not only are these companies pioneers in their fields, but now they mentor girls to have strong work ethic, smart business practices, and bold futures as the next-generation of outstanding professional women.

  • Our GO Onward program will serve 300 girls throughout 2008--that's 100 more girls than 2007!
GO Onward serves girls and young women 8-21 who are in, or transitioning from, out-of-home care, including residential programs and foster care.
Thank you for your ongoing support and most of all, thank you for the tireless dedication to empower all girls to be strong, smart and bold.

Warm regards,

Annette Klinefelter
Executive Director
Girls Inc. of NW Oregon

Feature Story
Wanted: Strong, smart and bold girls to serve as 2008 Girls' Council Members
We are currently recruiting girls for our 2008-2009 Girls' Council, which acts as our youth board of directors and meets monthly at the Girls Inc. headquarters. The Girls' Council offers girls an exciting opportunity to practice leadership and build communication skills by:

  • Providing insightful feedback on Girls Inc. programming
  • Learning how to advocate on behalf of all girls through meetings with community leaders and local media
  • Serving as Girls Inc. representatives at fundraising events and speaking engagements
Do you know a strong, smart and bold girl?
Of the 2,000 girls served this year, only 20 girls will be chosen as Girls' Council members. To be considered for the Council, girls must answer the following three essay questions:
  • Why should your community invest in you?
  • What have you learned from Girls Inc.?
  • Why would you be a good representative for Girls Inc.?

Essays due no latter than 5:00 PM, February 19th.
If you know a girl who would benefit from the Girls' Council, please help them answer the above questions, and send essays to:
    Girls Inc.
    1233 SE Stark St.
    Portland, 97214
    Email: erica@girlsincnworegon.org
    Fax: 503-230-0057

In their first official role as Girls' Council members...
The girls will model handbags during our annual fundraising event, Power of the Purse, April 10th. With over 500 people in attendance, this is a unique opportunity for our girls to learn poise, practice communication skills, and meet local celebrities, community leaders, and Girls Inc. supporters.

    Did You Know…
    $700,000...
Is the estimated work-life earnings of a woman without a high school diploma?

    That number increases to:

  • $1 million if she has a high school diploma
  • $1.6 million if she has a bachelor's degree
  • $2.9 million if she has a professional degree (i.e., medical, law, veterinarian)--that is 4 times as much as a woman without a high school dipolma!

For women, like men, more education means higher career earnings. This is why programs like those offered by Girls Inc. are so important. They inspire girls to set goals, dream big, and achieve even bigger!

    Girls Inc. in the News
Wishes do come true: Girls Inc. gets a new van!
As a result of being featured in the Oregonian's 2007 Wish Book, Girls Inc. received a generous--and much needed--donation of a new van. An anonymous donor made our wish of a new 12-passenger van come true! The van allows us to overcome one of our biggest challenges: transporting girls throughout the metro area. Now getting girls around town to groups, activities, and events will be a breeze.
