Power of the Purse celebrity, Jerome Kersey, and Girls Council Members

Dear Friends of Girls Inc.,
For thousands of Oregon girls facing social or economic challenges, the encouragement to envision a brighter future--to see within themselves a person defined by more than external circumstances--can be the most important opportunity they will ever receive. Girls Inc. fulfills that need for 2,500 young women in our community every day. Our programs, advocacy, and public education efforts encourage girls to dream big and provide them with the tools they need to reach those dreams.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Power of the Purse next month where I can introduce you to our new Girls Council. Thank you all for your continued, heart-felt support to help girls reach their potential and become the empowered and economically-independent women of tomorrow.

Warm regards,
Annette

Feature Story
Introducing the 2008-2009 Girls Council Members!
Girls Inc. received strong, smart and bold essays from girls across the Portland-metropolitan area telling us why they should be on the Girls' Council, which acts as our youth board of directors. Of the 2,000 girls to be served this year, only 18 girls were chosen as Girls' Council members:

  • Abby D.
  • Arlen H.
  • Alexys H.
  • Blanca G.
  • Catie W.
  • Elizabeth N.
  • Hannah M.
  • Isabel K..
  • Jordan S.
  • Ja'cal P.
  • Jami M.
  • Karina L.
  • Kyra L.
  • Lumi B.
  • Shayla N.
  • Skye A.
  • Vanessa P.
  • Victoria K.

We are so proud of all the girls that applied
It was so inspiring to hear their stories. Here is what a few girls had to say:

    You all may know me…
As a silly ten-year-old girl, but deep inside I'm strong, smart and bold. I am strong because I am focused. I am smart because I keep my head in the game. And most all, I am bold because I show younger kids that I'm a role model. That is why my community should invest in me.

I think that the community should invest not just in me…
But all the other girls as well because we are strong and we believe in ourselves. We will soon have enough power to change the world because a lot of people underestimate women and what we can handle. You, I, and many other people are experiencing a new event that will soon be history for the people of the future to learn about. There is a woman running for president. Back when my grandparents were kids, this was unheard of. I think that women are just as important as men.

Living on my dreams, I have a fiery passion for learning…
Here at Girls Inc. I have learned to place my ideas out in the open trusting others to help me fool proof and carry out my plans. My life revolves around the fact that I am a young woman, knowing this I feel the surge that drives me to help other girls see just how strong, smart and bold they can be.

Does she remind you of your self as a little girl?
Power of the Purse is the Girls' Council first public appearance and their first chance to show you how strong, smart and bold you've helped them to become. Hope you meet them there!

    Did You Know…
That March is National Women's History Month?

"History helps us learn who we are, but when we don't know our own history, our power and dreams are immediately diminished."
    - National Women's History Project

National Women's History Month ensures women's history will be recognized and celebrated in schools, workplaces, and communities throughout the country. The knowledge of women's history provides a more expansive vision of what a woman can do, encourages girls and women to think larger and bolder, and provides boys and men a fuller understanding of the female experience.

Visit National Women's History Project online to learn more about how people are celebrating National Women's History month across the country.
