Girls Inc. girls at the 6th United Girls Summit

Dear Friends of Girls Inc.,
Thank you to everyone who contacted our County Commissioners on behalf of our girls. As a result of your efforts, the funding was approved and will provide GO Onward services for 200 girls at risk of school failure, early pregnancy, and early substance abuse throughout the county. On behalf of these girls, I thank you!

The 2007-2008 school year was amazing. We serve many inspiring girls across the Portland-metro area. The United Girls Summit, held May 22, was a great way to close the year with over 1,200 girls from Oregon and Southwest Washington convening at the Oregon Convention Center. Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors, and speakers and exhibitors for making this event a huge success, inspiring all girls to reach their limitless potential.

Warm regards,

Annette Klinefelter
Executive Director
Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon

Did You Know…
Never underestimate the power of role models
A recent CIO.com article reported on a RIM (Reseach in Motion) Study that found girls are not interested in IT careers due to lack of female role models. Consider the 90 percent of girls between the ages of 11 and 16 who think computers and cutting edge gadgets are cool, while only 28 percent of those girls are considering careers in the technology industry.

Girls Inc.--taking this challenge head on!
This year, Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon will partner with local tech-businesses, including Tektronix, CH2M Hill, Intel, and OHSU, to launch SMART Girls in all of our sites. The SMART Girls curriculum encourages and inspires girls to enter science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) careers through field-based learning and regular interaction with female STEM professionals. With the help of female CIO's and leaders, girls can confidently enter STEM careers and rise to the top of their field. If you are a STEM professional and would like to participate in the SMART Girls program, please contact Bonni Goldberg at 503-230-0054 x 8 for more information.

    Engineering and Computer Animation Camp
For girls ages 8-11, Girls Inc. will be partnering with Portland Wiz kids to provide an Engineering and Computer Animation camp for girls! Each morning focuses on a theme relevant to girls' lives to demonstrate how big of an impact engineering and technology plays on their everyday lives. After lunch, work with computer animation software and learn how to create characters that dance, sing, and interact with one another, create images that whirl, spin, and animate in response to movements of the mouse, and integrate images with sound effects and music clips to create an interactive birthday card for a friend, or an interactive report for school. Gain skills that will be critical to success in the future: thinking creatively, communicating clearly, analyzing systematically, collaborating effectively, designing iteratively, and learning continuously. This is a very exciting opportunity!
