Girls Inc. in the Gorge with Oregon Wild for Summer Hike '08

Dear Friends of Girls Inc.,
At last year's Heart of the Woman Luncheon, Girls Inc. launched the Associates Mentoring Program to prepare girls for meaningful work through collective workplace mentoring with professional women during the workday. I am proud to say that in year one of the Program, we engaged 60 girls and 20 mentors from 5 local companies and raised over $50,000 in contributions. October kicks off year two of the Associates Mentoring Program. Based on the Program's first year of success, I can't wait to see what year two has to offer. I am proud of the work the women and girls accomplished. Thank you mentors!

We are also starting our Girls Inc. Forum (see last article below) and invite you all to sound-off on women's and girls' issues impacting you and your community. If an in-person approach is more your style, we would love to hear from you at our Heart of a Woman luncheon. I hope to see you there.

Warm regards,

Annette Klinefelter

Feature Story
You're Hired: Associate Mentorship Program Project Competition
We are proud and excited to announce the first year of our Associate Mentorship Program (AMP) was a huge success. Girls and mentors alike are proud of the skills, friendships, and the projects they developed. To close the year, AMP culminates with a competition among the participating teams of girls and companies to decide the best project of the year. Girls on the wining team receive a 529 college-saving plan--valued at $250--that she and her family can continue to contribute.

Our very own Girl Council members judge the projects on the following criteria:

  • Originality--How well does the project express an original idea? If it's not original, how does it take recycled information in an original direction or with new information?
  • Relevance--How well does the project benefit girls and inspire futures thinking?
  • Span of Reach--Is the team clear on their target market, the population they intend to reach?
  • Teamwork--How well did the team work together? Did each person demonstrate leadership and engagement?
  • Quality--Does the project reflect well-thought out, clearly constructed, visually appealing detail?
We will display the projects and announce the winning team at our Heart of a Woman Luncheon, October 16, 2008. Below are a few of the industry-leading companies and the project they worked on with their team of girls:
  • PGE--Power Grid Model
Physical model of how electricity is generation and then deployed across the city, including different positions one can hold with PGE to help take electricity from a generator to a house.

  • The Standard--Financial Smarts Board Game for Girls
In this project, girls learned about saving, spending, investing, and setting financial goals founded in good decision making--inspiring them to lead economically independent lives.

  • NW Staffing--Job-Readiness Guide for Girls
Girls learn the ins- and outs of a job search, including how to dress for interviews, how to interview, how to look for a job, who to talk to, appropriate professional demeanor, and how to create a resume. The Guide is targeted to girls who are preparing to enter the work force.
We are currently recruiting girls ages 10-18 for this year's AMP sites. Deadline for applications is September 20, so apply today!

Did You Know...
Girls Keep Pace with Boys in Math
A recent
Associated Press article, reported on a study that found "girls measured up to boys in every grade level from second through 11th." Research conducted by the University of Wisconsin, released in the journal of Science, reminds us all of how girls--and women--have overcome the affliction of negative gender stereotypes.

The study confirms what Girls Inc. already knows...
That boys and girls can equally compete in math and science throughout their academic careers. While girls have narrowed the gap in standardized testing, moving that knowledge into the real-world field of science and technology still remains largely the work of men.

Girls Inc. continues to work tirelessly to mend the gender gap in the fields of science and technology through our programs and curricula. In the coming school year, Girls Inc. programming will include specific curriculum focused on introducing and inspiring girls to pursue careers as scientists, engineers, and where ever their dreams and brains take them. Email us to learn more about our science, technology, engineering, and math curricula or sound-off on this issue in our Forum.

Giving to Girls Inc. Means Giving to Girls
Support Girls Inc. through GREAT Music Created by Our Girls
Last year, several of our girls participated in the Deep Roots Music project. The girls wrote and produced songs that were performed and recorded by some of Portland's best local musicians such as Liv Warfield, Stephanie Scheiderman, Morgan Grace & others.

Dr. Martens sponsored the CD launch party at the Girls Summit in May. Listen and buy the CD online for $12. All proceeds benefit Girls Inc.

Created by the next generation of song writers--our very own Girls Inc. girls from your community--this CD delivers outstanding, heartfelt songwriting. We are so blessed to have such creative and inspirational girls and women in our own community!

Thank you Dr. Martens and Deep Roots!
