Girls Take Off with REI, Oregon Wild, and Girls Inc.

Dear Friends of Girls Inc.,
Thank you to the more than 350 Girls Inc. supporters who helped us honor and celebrate our Volunteer, Business Partner, and Girl of the Year at our Heart of a Woman Luncheon.

There was not a dry eye in the room as Jami, Girl of the Year, received her award. Jami, and girls like her across our state, inspire me everyday to continue to fight and advocate for the rights of all girls to grow into confident and economically-independent women. Thank you Jami!

And thank all of you who attended and donated at Heart of a Woman. With the current volatile economic state of our country, girls will need Girls Inc. more than ever to help them understand and navigate tough situations at school, home, and among friends. You gave from your hearts and helped us meet our fundraising goals. Thank you!

Warm Regards,

Annette Klinefelter

The Heart of a Woman Luncheon was beautiful! Girls Inc. celebrated the hard work and dedication of the many volunteers, donors, and community leaders that have gave time, money, and love to prepared more than 10,000 girls for a confident and economically-independent adulthood.

More than 350 Portland girls, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, and community and business leaders honored the following individuals for their strong, smart, and bold service and achievement this past year:

  • Girl of the Year: Jami M.
  • Volunteer of the Year: Cindy Tortorici
  • Business Partner of the Year: The Standard

    Way to go CH2M Hill!
Congratulations to the CH2M Hill Associates Mentoring Team for creating the winning Associates Mentoring Program (AMP) project! Girls on the team received a 529 college savings plan valued at $750--due to the generosity of Regence and Umpqua Bank matching contributions--for her family to continue to contribute.

    And thanks to our donors!
We met our fundraising goal for the Luncheon with contributions totaling more than $30,000! Thank you all for attending and giving from your heart as well as your purse!

    Did You Know...
Six years ago, Portland residents decided to make children a higher priority by passing the Children's Levy and creating the Portland Children's Investment Fund.

Please remember to vote yes on for the Children - Measure 26-94!

Early intervention will save us millions in the long run.
Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon could not continue the work we do without the financial support of the Children's Investment Fund (CHIF). In fact, CHIF finances 1/3 of our School-Based sites where we help prepare girls for a confident and economically-independent adulthood.

    Visit www.childrenslevy.com for more information
Your voice is needed more than ever in passing this important measure for our children!

    Girls Inc. in the News
"The only person I want to be is me."
Girls Inc. Celebrates the Importance of Girls' Voices through the Dear World public education campaign

At the national level, Girls Inc. launched the Dear World public education campaign as part of an on-going commitment by Girls Inc. to show girls that their voices are trusted, respected, and valued and to raise awareness about issues that affect girls' everyday lives.

The campaign includes television public service announcements (PSAs) and a web site dedicated to giving girls a positive place to express their daily realities, hopes, fears, and dreams. View behind-the-scenes footage, and interactive opportunities for girls and adults to share their own Dear World messages here

    Become a Girls Inc. Volunteer!
We need the following volunteer positions:

    Co-Facilitators
Using Girls Inc. curriculum, co-facilitators assist the lead facilitator with afterschool girls groups designed to help reduce relational aggression, build self-esteem, and cultivate communication and leadership skills. Groups meet once per week for 1.5 hours, typically between 2:00-5:00 pm. Volunteers must possess the following criteria to be considered: experience working with youth, reliability, effective oral communication, willingness to be a team player, and flexibility.

    Media Artists
As part of the Allies in Action curriculum, girls are given the opportunity to create their own messages and express themselves through different forms of media. In the past couple of years, over 300 Allies in Action girls have worked with local media artists to create their own strong, smart, and bold stories and demonstrate them via the mediums of film, music, magazines, web, radio, and visual arts. The media artist is a very important person in this process. Volunteer media artists will assist the girls in creating and implementing a quality, professional project.

If you are inspired to volunteer with girls in either of these capacities and have availability, please contact Alissa Cattone, Volunteer Coordinator, at 503-230-0054 x 7.
