Girls enjoy a snow-filled day of snowshoeing in a recent Girls Take Off event at Wildwood Recreation Site.

Dear Friends of Girls Inc.,
Especially during these economically strenuous times, girls need more help than ever. With increased unemployment comes increased family violence and substance abuse. Statistically, girls bear the greatest burden of family trauma, disproportionately impacted by sexual and physical violence.

Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon is proud to be supported by a strong network of donors who partner with us in our tireless efforts to provide girls with the support and self-esteem to access a bright and economically-independent future. This could not be more evident after Power of the Purse. Because of you -- our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and girls -- we raised an unprecedented $180,000! Thank you! Please visit our Web site to see wonderful photos of the event.

Over 40% of our funds come from private donations. The rest of our donations come from local community foundations and area businesses. Our donors at every level are vital to providing our programs. Our loyal yearly and monthly donors stabilize our funding and allow us to consistently provide our services to girls.

Without the support of all of our donors, Girls Inc. would be unable to reach over 1,000 girls a year with our strong, smart, and bold programming. We are proud and honored to have the continuing support of our community.

Warm regards,

Annette Klinefelter
Executive Director
Girls Inc. of NW Oregon

Feature Story
Currently, more than 100 girls ages 7 to 17 across the Portland community are at work on media projects: films, zines, songs, and various other creative outlets. In May, girls will unveil their original media pieces that accurately portray girls' voices, issues and opportunities directly countering the stereotypical portrayal of girls in the mass media in the Girls Inc. of NW Oregon third annual showcase "Lights, Camera, Allies in Action."

The girls focus on solutions to media toxicity, not the problems it causes, and create outstanding pieces that explore everything from body image to friendships to responsibility. It's a far cry from the typical mass media concoction of girl fights, beauty-over-brains and commercialism.

The final projects are part of a media literacy workshop in Girls Inc.'s Allies in Action curriculum, a nationally recognized model designed to build positive girl-to-girl relationships through team building, leadership, critical analysis, effective conflict coaching and skill building.

Allies in Action is one of the few fully developed, evaluated, and effective programs in the United States that addresses girls' complex social realities and offers the critical vocabulary and tools girls need to confront stereotypes, work together, create safe spaces, and live on their own terms. Allies in Action builds on girls' capacity for loyalty, sense of fairness, and pleasure in each others' company to develop real power to live well and make the world a better place.

Sponsor Spotlight Correction Notice
In the Girls Inc of NW Oregon January newsletter, the Sponsor Spotlight article titled "Nike Foundation Supports the Associate Mentoring Program" was incorrectly titled and inaccurately described the sponsorship by Nike employees supporting the Girls Inc. Associate Mentoring Program. We sincerely apologize for the error and would like to acknowledge and thank the GOT (Global Operations and Technology) Women's Network that is sponsoring the Associate Mentoring Program.

Nike Global Operations and Technology Women's Network Supports the Associate Mentoring Program
Nike is graciously sponsoring two teams this year through the Associate Mentoring Program. There are a total of 15 mentors paired up with 12 girls between the two groups. So far the girls have received a Nike campus tour, shopped at the employee store, learned about the Nike Foundation, and how they are investing in adolescent girls.

The women at Nike are collectively mentoring the girls in the Associate Mentoring Program to not only support the girls in the program, but to create a challenge project as well, a product, service or presentation related to the work of the company and girl focused. We look forward to seeing the work that Nike and our Girls Inc. girls complete through working together.

Did You Know...

Girls Inc. launches Dear World public education campaign
Girls Inc. believes that all girls are inherently strong, smart, and bold, and showing them that their voices are trusted, respected, and above all, heard is a critical part of helping them stay that way in the face of gender stereotypes and pressure to conform.

We asked girls everywhere,

"If you could send a message to the whole world about what it's like growing up as a girl today, what would you say?"

They spoke and wrote, shouted, laughed, whispered, and signed. They said,

"The only person I want to be is me."

Join Girls Inc. in honoring girls voices help us ask the whole world to sit up, pay attention, and celebrate along with us. Welcome to Girls Inc. Dear World.

Girls Inc. has launched a YouTube channel as part of the YouTube for Non-Profits program. Here you can view the recent Dear World PSA. The Girls Inc. YouTube Channel will serve as the exclusive outlet for visitors to view Girls Inc. video content from both the national and local organizations.
