Japantown on Its Way to Securing Heritage
In an effort to strengthen Japantown's identity as a cultural, spiritual, recreational, and commercial center of the region's Japanese and Japanese-American community, Supervisor Mirkarimi introduced a Special Use District (S.U.D.) legislation in March. On May 25th, the Planning Commission approved this legislation.

As of now, the Land Use Committee is scheduled to make its final decision on June 16th. The S.U.D. will then be brought before the full Board of Supervisors. In mid-March, a rally was held at City Hall calling on the city government to help preserve Japantown's rare and unique Japanese cultural identity. Foot Patrols Needed
With homicides continuing to plague the City, Supervisor Mirkarimi has introduced legislation creating a pilot program to mandate increased police foot patrols in specified areas in District 5. By increasing police visibility, foot patrols help strengthen bonds with the community and reduce street crime. In spite of existing police policy to fully staff foot patrols, the absence of a legislative mandate means that other priorities often take precedence. The proposed new law calls for a one-year pilot program in which Park Station and Northern Station each staff at least two foot patrols per day. It would also require that a comprehensive report on the progress and effectiveness of the patrols be prepared in six months.

Surveillance Cameras in District 5
Supervisor Mirkarimi has also introduced an ordinance, which recently passed unanimously, to regulate the use of community safety cameras. The law would limit cameras to areas with a substantial crime problem and would mandate a community notice and review process. The Police Commission would be charged with determining whether a proposed camera placement has significant support from the community, and once a camera was operational access to the images would be limited to police with a rank of Inspector or higher. Finally, review of a camera's images would only be allowed for the investigation of specific crimes.
