We Got the Beats!!!
Police Foot Patrol Legislation Passes

After nearly a year of hard work and advocacy, the Board of Supervisors voted 8 to 3 to establish foot beats in 8 of the 10 City Police Stations. Legislation to cover the remaining stations will soon follow. The legislation mandating that the Police Department staff foot patrols two of three shifts a day will go into effect in the New Year. Supervisor Mirkarimi and numerous community organizations will be hosting a community event in January with our beat officers and services providers. Stay tuned for more information. Thank you to the numerous neighborhood organizations, non-profits, and neighbors who advocated for the passage of this law.

Reentry Summitt Addresses Challenges of Effective Parolee Services

The SF Safe Communities Reentry Council (SCRC), organized by Supervisor Mirkarimi and Public Defender Jeff Adachi, came together on September 27th for an all-day summit, with the theme, "Making Rehabilitation Work: Creating Opportunities for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals."

The standing room only summit brought together over two dozen government agencies and reentry service organizations to create a community support system for parolees returning to the community that helps them successfully reenter society, reduces recidivism, and promotes public safety.

The goals of the SCRC include providing individual re-entry plans--including housing, health, education, and employment opportunities--for every prisoner before their release, supporting parolees after their release, and continuing to support parolees after their release.

Farmers' Market Legislation in Committee on November 20th
Farmers' markets may soon materialize across a number of San Francisco's parks. Pending legislation introduced in late July by District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi would allow for farmers' markets, in coalition with the city's Recreation and Park Department, to reside on Recreation and Park property. The legislation requires that the markets not interfere with regular usage of park grounds, play areas, or athletic fields.

Given the recent wave of grocery store closures across the City, promoting farmers' markets is an important step in providing neighborhood access to fresh and healthy food. Farmers' markets also help bolster the City's economic stability and our neighborhood's vitality.

PARK(ing) Day
On September 21st, Supervisor Mirkarimi donated his City Hall parking space so that it could be transformed into a temporary urban park--complete with benches and potted plants. The project, known as PARK(ing) Day, was created by Rebar a collaborative group of creators, designers and activists. The Trust for Public Land also helped with financing support. John Bela of Rebar said "We want to get the public to rethink the way streets are used. Why not interpret a parking space as something that can be leased short term and used as a legitimate extension of open space?"

John Muir Elementary PTA
There has not been a PTA at John Muir Elementary School for over 50 years. In August 2006 fifteen founding members corrected that statistic, including Supervisor Mirkarimi, Beat Officers Antron and Ron, and Superintendent Gwen Chan. In one month the membership grew to 58. The California Public Utilities adopted the John Muir PTA and raised $5000 in a two-week fundraiser held in their lobby. The PTA has also received generous support from Patxi's Pizza on Hayes and Citibank's Castro branch. The support has been astounding and almost overwhelming. There are co-op work days scheduled along with the help of Steve Shululu at San Francisco School Volunteers not to mention the support of Koshland's Gardener, Rebecca Bozzelli and Lee at Beacon Center located at John Muir.

For more information, contact Gail Baugh, President, Madeline Behrens-Brigham, Secretary, or Marta Madrigal, Parent Liaison.

Happy 50th Birthday, Richard Johnson!

As a community activist Richard has championed diversity and fostered cooperation between neighborhood groups, city government, businesses, faith-based groups, and caring individuals to effect positive change. Richard has been a role model for developing neighborhood involvment in community policing.

Thank You to Our Star Volunteer, Shawna Del Bucchia
It's with bittersweet emotions that we congratulate one of our star volunteers, Shawna Del Bucchia, on her new job. Shawna helped create a sustainable structure for the San Francisco Safe Communities Reentry Council and reached out to community members and government agencies to keep everyone involved. Her self-initiative has been an inspiration to all of us and we'll miss the boundless energy and enthusiasm she brought to the office.
