Thank You, Neighborhood Volunteer Work Parties!
Big thanks to everyone who participated in the North of Panhandle and Haight/Golden Gate Park volunteer work parties. The Chronicle wrote an article on the Haight clean-up with the headline
Fighting crime in the Haight using a broom. On July 29th, more than 100 people came together to beautify the Upper Haight, Panhandle, and Golden Gate Park. The Chronicle called it an "unlikely mix of kids, police officers, politicians,
city workers, neighbors, merchants and homeless people."
Also, on August 5th, more than two dozen volunteers pitched in to spruce up the North of the Panhandle neighborhood.
Please join us at one of the September neighborhood park volunteer work parties on Saturday, September 16th at Alamo Square Park or Saturday, September 23rd at Kimball Park or Alvord Lake. See the
Upcoming Events below for more details.
Please Support Police Foot Patrol Legislation
Supervisor Mirkarimi's legislation to create a pilot police foot patrol program will be voted on by the Board of Supervisors on September 19th. By increasing police visibility, foot patrols help strengthen bonds with the community and
reduce street crime.
The proposed new law calls for a one-year pilot program in which Park Station and Northern Station each staff at least two foot patrols
per day. It would also require that a comprehensive report on the progress and effectiveness of the patrols be prepared in six months.

Here is a KRON-4 interview with Ross on foot beat patrols. (If you do not see the video below, you can view it on

Please contact the Mayor and the other members of the Board of Supervisors and urge them to support this legislation and ask them to expand it to other San Francisco neighborhoods.
Neighbors Create Safe Return to School Day
On Monday August 28th, more than seventy neighbors celebrated the first day of school by spreading out from the now-shuttered John Swett Elementary School to the corner of Haight and Webster to escort children as they walked to school. The
event was organized by several neighborhood groups, including the Lower Haight Neighborhood Association, the District 5 School Community Network, the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association, the Hayes Valley Safety Network, and the John Muir
PTA. Supervisors Mirkarimi and Dufty were joined by Chief Heather Fong, Captain Dillon from the Northern Station, and Alan Nance the Director of the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice. Local merchants donated school supplies, apples, and
juice boxes for the kids and coffee for the adults. Here are links to articles about the event on
KCBS and in the
San Francisco Sentinel.
Ellis Act Evictions at 1530 McAllister Street
San Francisco's limited stock of rental housing is being threatened by yet another speculator-driven set of Ellis Act evictions. 1530 McAllister Street is a seven-unit building, and the current tenants reflect the diversity of the City:
the building is home to singles, couples, babies, children, disabled seniors, and transgendered folks. Tenants include an 89-year-old African-American woman, a 68-year-old retiree who has lived in building for 25 years, and a family with a
five-week-old baby. On July 27th Supervisor Mirkarimi joined tenants, activists, the Senior Action Network, the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, and others in a demonstration and protest at the offices of the realtors in question. The threatened
evictions are still pending, and more information about this important issue can be found here. Here are links to articles about the protest in the
Examiner and
San Francisco Sentinel. Below is a KTVU-2 story on the protest. (If you do not see the video below, you can view it on
youtube.com).
Sidewalk Cafe Legislation to be Heard in Land Use Committee
Supervisor Mirkarimi's legislation to streamline the process for cafes and restaurants to place tables and chairs on the sidewalks outside their businesses. The legislation includes safeguard to ensure that sidewalks are not obstructed,
such as requiring that at least six feet of sidewalk space remains accessible, and that bus stops and curb cuts are not blocked. The permit to place tables and chairs outside costs between $100 and $360.
To see a video of an ABC-7 story on the legislation,

DPW's webpage.
Overflow Crowd Attends Peak Oil Hearing
On July 28th, a standing-room only crowd packed the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) hearing on the ramifications of Peak Oil for San Francisco. Peak Oil is the theory that global oil production will peak and then steadily
decline. As the world's population and energy consumption continue to increase, a worldwide oil shortage will have catastrophic consequences on our economy, infrastructure, and personal lives.
