Forget Alternative Fuels, AAA Wants to Subsidize Oil Companies

While They're At It, Why Not Subsidize Bill Gates, the New York Yankees, and Internet Porn?

AAA has a long tradition of maligning restrictions on--and alternatives to--the automobile: including Mass Transit, Bicycle Paths, and the Clean Air Act. Now the Auto Club of Southern California has officially come out in opposition to California's Proposition 87.

Added to the ballot by a signature petitions, the goal of Proposition 87 is to reduce petroleum consumption by 25%, and increase research & development of alternative energy sources and technologies. It raises the R & D funding.by bringing California's royalties on oil drilling into line with that of other oil-producing states like Alaska and Texas. In other words, it is a proposition that a free-marketer should love: it takes a modest step toward market priced royalties.

The proposition, which requires any additional costs "not be passed on to consumers through higher prices for oil, gasoline, or diesel fuel" has been denounced by Thomas McKernan, President and CEO of the Automobile Club of Southern California Complete Story

Democrats Announce Plan to Attack Global Warming

From The San Francisco Chronicle

Washington -- California Sen. Dianne Feinstein offered an outline of the Democratic plan to attack global warming in the next session of Congress. Feinstein unveiled a legislative package she intends to introduce when Congress reconvenes in January. The bills would require carmakers to improve mileage and would coax power producers to meet emission standards, while extending California-style green-technology programs nationwide.

"There now is a scientific consensus that global warming is happening and we can't stop it,"... Complete Story

Shock of the Century: Fuel Prices Up. Unless you Drive Electric. But That is Shocking Too.

The increasing costs of petroleum and the effect that it has on the American economy has been the subject of much hysteria, concern and legislation. Better World Club's Fuel Report reflects the average costs of alternative fuels versus standard fuels. In many cases, drivers of alternative-fueled vehicles are more likely to be 'gently disciplined' rather than 'hit hard' by high fuel prices.

August has seen biodiesel rise across the entire country, yet Ethanol has decreased in 3 of 5 regions. Reflecting the importance of availability, Ethanol 85 is either the least or most expensive automobile fuel, depending on the region.

Foreign Cars Pass Big 3

For the 1st time, U.S. drivers buy more import brands

Based on a Report from The Detroit News

For the first time, U.S. consumers are buying more cars and trucks built by foreign automakers than vehicles made by Detroit's traditional Big Three.

New statistics compiled by R.L. Polk and Co., which counts new car registrations and excludes sales to rental car agencies and other fleet customers, show foreign brands commanded 52.9 percent of the retail auto market in the first five months of 2006, while domestic automakers fell to 47.1 percent.

Domestic brands led foreign makes 51 percent to 49 percent over the same period last year.

While the power shift has been long in the making, it's nonetheless a disheartening sign that Detroit's auto industry is losing the battle for the hearts and wallets of American car buyers. Complete Story
