Round and Round They Go

AAA Sponsors NASCAR, Which Goes Nowhere

Better World Club Sponsors a Different Kind of Race (see below)

Environmentalists have attacked AAA's anti-environmental lobbying practices for several years now. Perhaps, as symbolic of AAA as anything else, is their sponsorship of NASCAR--and its very own NASCAR team.

Better World Club supports friendly competition, even if it can be accused of being a time waster (view any of the Presidential Debates lately?). But, this is one that consumes 216,000-2,000,000 gallons of gas annually (depending on whether you use NASCAR or environmental group statistics). Complete Story.

Actually, It's Time to Announce Better World Club's Carbon Offset Contributions

Nearly 2,000 offsets makes BWC One of Larger Offset Buyers In U.S.

Drive Neutral, Portland Schools Receive Funds

As carbon offsetting becomes more popular, there has also been a (inevitable?) backlash against offsets. Some argue that global warming doesn't exist (see next door's Washington Watch) while others see the offsets as assuaging guilt rather than greenhouse gas.

Better World Club believes that even if you don't believe in global warming, greenhouse gas is still air pollution. Is greenhouse gas good for you? And carbon offsets are a necessary form of remediation--just like medicine when we get sick.

This year, Better World Club is donating $8,000 to Carbon Offset partner Drive Neutral and another $2,000+ to the Portland schools as part of its TravelCool! program which helps offset the greenhouse gas generated by the air/auto travel of Better World members. BWC has also provided funding to the Social Ventures Network carbon offset program and the Carbon Neutral Network. Complete Story

BWC Members Can Be "Cool" And Offset Their Own Emissions...

Better World Club can't fight this form of air pollution alone. We now make it easy to offset your greenhouse gas emissions from flying or driving for the year (for auto insurance customers, the remainder of your auto emissions). Just follow the simple instructions below:

1.) Precisely determine the carbon footprint of your air travel.
2.) Easily and precisely offset the greenhouse gas emissions of your automobile (or to offset the emissions beyond the first 2,000 miles of driving if you are a Better World Club insurance client.)

President Bush Finally Admits that Global Warming Exists!

And That Humans Are Responsible!

Except for Him

While hosting a conference on climate change last week, President George W. Bush made an announcement that environmentalists are dismissing, but which could not have made his conservative supporters very happy either.

After years of resistance, all but a few conservatives (i.e. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity) are admitting that global warming is occurring. The new dividing line has been over whether warming was "man made".

Conservatives such as George Will argued that while warming was happening, it had happened many times in the past and that it could easily be followed by a period of cooling. Given this history, the argument that this warming period was caused by man's increasing use of carbon was suspect. Complete Story

Nationally and regionally, fuel prices are fairly stable, with the exception of petroleum-based diesel. The changing of the seasons is increasing demand for diesel, which is used in many households as home heating oil.

Do you have an unnatural interest in fuel prices? Are you a fan of tables filled with important-looking numbers? If so, we recommend finding a healthier hobby (following Wayne Newton on tour* and stealing his used tissues from the trash can in his hotel bathroom for your "collection", etc.), or you can feed your fetish by checking out BWC's previous Alternative Fuel Report 'Great News! Runny Noses, Miserable Weather, and Fruitcake Aren't the Only Things To Look Forward to This Winter!' as published in the September 20th issue of 'Kicking Asphalt'.

Boredom May Be a Factor in Sales Slump; Comparing a 'New' Focus With Diesel Civic

By Joseph B. White
The Wall Street Journal

"I'm bored. I'm chairman of the bored." – Iggy Pop.

New-car sales are sagging in America and car makers are blaming the housing slump or the credit crunch. I suspect something else. I suspect boredom.

Face it. A lot of the cars sold in America are just dull. Whose heart leaps at the thought of firing up a Toyota Corolla? If you took away the logos, who could discern a significant difference among the interiors of any five $35,000 luxury cars? Black plastic, faux wood grain, even "metallic look" plastics -- clichés all. Sport utility vehicles and crossovers? Ho hum.

Under the hood, too many cars sold in America are equally uninspiring. Car makers have done wonderful things improving upon century-old gasoline internal-combustion engine technology. But it's still a century old. It's as if, instead of the iPod, we still got our music from lacquer records that had been refined to hold 100 minutes of songs. Complete Story

Recasting Big Oil's Battered Image

Ads by Chevron and Others Aim to Send Positive Messages

by Steven Mufson
Washington Post

A 2 1/2 -minute television commercial will debut this weekend, directed by Lance Acord, the cinematographer on "Lost in Translation," "Being John Malkovich" and "Marie Antoinette." It will feature music by the British composer Paul Leonard-Morgan, who was recently commissioned to write a piece for the U.S. Olympic Committee. And it will have an earnest voice-over by acclaimed indie actor Campbell Scott.

All this theatrical firepower has been marshaled for a new "power of human energy" campaign by Chevron, a charter member of Big Oil (often seen as Big Bad Oil). In today's eco-conscious political environment, Chevron is trying to portray itself as a company with "people of vision" striving to meet today's energy needs while searching for better, cleaner ways to meet them in the future.
