"Of Course We Have Room for the Bedroom Set, Honey! We Can Just Tie It To The Roof"

Whoa, There Einstein: The Roof Is A Bad Place To Pack Items On Road Trips

Packing suitcases, boxes, and dead Aunts (ŕ la National Lampoon's Vacation) on your roof are a surefire way to increase drag and decrease your fuel efficiency. Be proactive. When shopping for a new car, there are several things you can look for that will help you avoid storing items on your car roof:

- Get a big trunk. The more junk in your trunk, the less you'll have to strap on the roof.

- How about a wagon? Many people poo-poo station wagons, but there are a lot of great models out there. Also, they're a great SUV substitute for people who claim to need them for hauling their children around.

- Look for a car with fold-down seats. This option greatly enhances interior storage capacity.

Will Last Week's Positive Supreme Court Decision Ultimately Lead To an Ironic Result?

Justice Kennedy Thwarts the Gutting of Environmental Law for 2nd Time This Term

High Court Faults EPA Inaction on Emissions

With the Supreme Court ruling that the Environmental Protection Agency must consider regulations of greenhouse gas emissions, the stage is now set for a bigger environmental decision regarding global warming. But now Better World Club wonders: will this positive decision of the Court ultimately have an ironic impact on these state efforts?

Given the EPA's failure to take a strong stand on the issue, BWC has been working in support of state efforts to regulate auto greenhouse gas emissions. Complete Story.

Nationwide, petroleum-based fuel prices are shooting up. Gasoline and Petroleum Diesel averages jumped $0.18 and $0.15, respectively, in the last two weeks. B20 Biodiesel, which is a mix of 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel, increased by $0.10. Conversely, averages for fuels using less petroleum dropped. E85 Ethanol (made from 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) dipped $0.03, and B99 Biodiesel (99% biodiesel and 1% petro-diesel) fell $0.06.

Regionally, B99, B20, and E85 pricing followed the national trend, except in the Southern Region. In the South, B99 and E85 averages rose $0.05 and $0.09, respectively.

Do you have an unnatural interest in fuel prices? Are you a fan of tables filled with important-looking numbers? If so, we recommend finding a healthier hobby (attending "ugly dog" contests, learning the true meaning of Christmas, etc.) or you can feed your fetish by checking out BWC's previous Alternative Fuel Report, Not Unlike The Jeffersons, Fuel Prices Are "Movin' On Up" as published in the March issue of ‘Kicking Asphalt'.

BWC High-Mileage Review

The Nissan AltimaNissan Tentatively Dips Its Toe Into The Hybrid Pool With The 2007 Altima

Have you ever seen those kids taking swim lessons at the "Y" decked out in inflatable armbands, a swim cap, goggles, earplugs, and noseplugs? You can tell they're not at ease in the water. Adding to the general sense of anxiety is the kid's mother, who's sitting nearby and watching the lessons with visible nervousness. It makes you wonder how long that kid will be taking swim lessons.

This is kind of our take on the 2007 Altima Hybrid, the first ever hybrid produced by Nissan. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn is not a hybrid fan, though he's producing one because people are buying them. Not wanting to invest a lot of time or money into a product line that they're not fully behind, Nissan made the decision to license Toyota technology. Click here to read the entire review.

Recall Information
March Recalls

GM is recalling 359 MY 2007 Pontiac G6 passenger vehicles for failing to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, 'Occupant Crash Protection.' The right front passenger seats in these vehicles are built with a passenger air bag sensing system. When tested with a representative, unrestrained six year old child, the system is required to turn off the right front passenger's airbag. Interference during system calibration caused the seats to be out of specification. This can increase the risk of injury to a child seat occupant during certain crash conditions. Dealers will replace the passenger sensing system free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. 07V-146

Ford is recalling 33,169 MY 2008 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 trucks equipped with a 6.4L diesel engine. Excessive temperatures in the diesel particulate filter in the exhaust system may result from excess hydrocarbons in the exhaust. Lack of power or rough operation, unusual noises from the engine or exhaust, white smoke from the exhaust, and potentially a visible flame out the tailpipe can occur. Dealers will reprogram the power train control module. The recall began on March 30, 2007. 07V-139. Complete List of March Recalls
