Wholesale Joe the Vacuum King
Over 62 years ago, before King Joe opened his first vacuum business, he found it hard to believe that one could make a $30 profit on a vacuum cleaner. One day, he went out with a salesman and his mind was changed. Joe opened the first
vacuum business in his home state of Washington. In 1958 he moved to San Diego and opened Midway Vacuum on Midway Drive, which is still in business today. Joe was interested in a better location, so in 1962 he moved to the corner of El
Cajon Boulevard and 43rd Street and he has been there ever since.
Joe considers this the finest corner in San Diego. According to him, El Cajon Boulevard receives over 30,000 drivers daily and 43rd Street has a an additional 10,000 drivers. Not to mention that in those days Lloyds, which was
considered the finest furniture store in San Diego, was directly across the street.
Joe modestly explained why he has the title ‘King'. Not only does he have the largest vacuum inventory in San Diego, he is certain that in his hey day he was the best vacuum salesman in San Diego. Wholesale Joe is also the master
distributor of Royal Appliance Company, the only all metal machine on the market today. With only 12 complaints in 46 years, King Joe is proud of his extraordinary record with the Better Business Bureau.
The vacuums range from $30 to $760. On the low end, Wholesale Joe the Vacuum King remains competitive with the vacuum cleaners that can be purchased at Wal-Mart. On the high end, they carry a supply of the best commercial grade machines
available for the home. Wholesale Joe also provides vacuum repair service and tune-ups.
After 46 years in business, Joe and his daughter Sonia (who has owned the business for the last year and a half) are ready to call it quits. Both the business and the property are for sale. El Cajon Boulevard has a history of dedicated
business owners. King Joe is a fine example of someone who has proudly contributed to the success of this thriving business district for over four decades.

Banners Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Boulevard Sign
The El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association had the special opportunity to work with leading graphic design students at San Diego State University. To promote the 20th Anniversary of the Boulevard Sign, students were asked
to create a banner design to highlight this milestone. Amongst fifteen competitive submissions the winning selection, designed by Andres Juarez, was printed on 10 banners in time for the anniversary event and the banners will remain up
for an entire year.
Here is what Andres had in mind while designing the banner image:
"I wanted to include the actual sign into my design. In my font selection I wanted to use something that was reminiscent of the time period, but not appear to be outdated. I did not want the font to contrast my design style. I kept the
copy to a minimum so as to not clutter the banner and have the image of the Boulevard sign be the central focus. I aimed for a contemporary design to bring new life into The Boulevard sign."
Small Business Media Opportunity
People Magazine is seeking the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce' help to find and interview small business owners who have gone the extra mile to help clients and customers affected by the recession, particularly those out of work.
Examples of ways businesses have stepped up include offering free childcare to parents going on job interviews, free dry-cleaning for job seekers, or other services to help those in need.
This is an excellent opportunity for visibility and to share how your business has helped out during these tough economic times. If you would like to be considered for this opportunity, please e-mail lgesner@sdchamber.org with your name,
a phone number for us to contact you, and a brief description of how your business has reached out to customers.
Yelp About The Boulevard
Minh Ky Chinese Restaurant
4644 El Cajon Blvd
Yelper: Minh Ky is a magical hole in the wall with all my favorite dishes done to perfection. We come rushing in assuming we will get turned down with 10 minutes left till closing. Instead we were greeted with smiling faces from
everyone. The waiter was so nice and friendly. Order $2.50 Tsing Tao from him and then started getting our delicious pork fried rice and other dishes. Everything was a hit. It was so inexpensive yet amazing that I can see myself going here
everytime I'm in that area.
When we attempted to pay with card, the lady at the counter said, "no, no, no" and jokingly said we were more than welcome to start on the dishes in the back. Luckily someone had cash. I like Chinese food. I really like amazing Chinese
food. I LOVE amazing Chinese food with an excellent and super friendly staff.

Featured Utility Box
The banner images created by graphic designs students at SDSU were so great that the El Cajon Boulevard BIA promotions committee decided that they should be painted on utility boxes as well. Artists Crol and Werc did an excellent job
of replicating the designs on the Boulevard's ever growing utility box art display.
