Soda Bar

A new spark of revitalization has made its way onto the Boulevard, and it's called the Soda Bar (3615 El Cajon Boulevard). The plan is to make this one of San Diego's best, intimate music venues for both local and national music.

Adam Cook and Cuong Nguyen, owners of the Soda Bar, were both born and raised in San Diego and have a background in real estate. With the recent downturn in the economy, the two business partners saw an opportunity to diversify their assets by investing in small retail establishments in the up and coming neighborhoods of San Diego.

A few years back, they started off by opening the Bluefoot Bar and Lounge in North Park. The staff at the Bluefoot are made up of mostly local artists and musicians who have stuck with them since day one. The Bluefoot does not host live music and their staff wanted an opportunity to operate a live music venue, so the two partners made it happen.

With the transition from Chasers, the dive bar which occupied the space where the Soda Bar is now located, Adam and Cuong wanted to keep prices low and retain that neighborhood bar feel. The bar menu was upgraded by offering a unique selection of 20 draft beers at affordable prices. Most evenings, you can walk in and catch an amazing band play for free. They also support the local art scene by featuring different artwork on their walls every month.

With the right staff, a great renovation, affordable prices, community dedication and excellent music, Adam and Cuong are applying all the right tools for long-term success.

Yelp About The Boulevard

Loving Hut

Yelper:
Much love for Loving Hut!

First of all, I just want to say that I'm SO DAMN HAPPY that I can finally get some excellent vegetarian pho without worrying about MSG and beef stock! The food here is quite tasty and the fact that everything is vegan is icing on the cake! Speaking of cake, their blueberry tart is VERY yummy and well worth saving some room for! My goal is to try everything on the menu because it all looks so good and well, it's good for you and the environment!

Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or a carnivore, this place is worth trying. It has already become a staple in my dining routine and I'm bringing everyone I know to this place so they can share the love!

Workshop Invites Local Artists and Musicians to Design Affordable Live/Work Spaces

DATES:
Friday September 11, 5:30-9:00 PM All participants invited to workshop designs
Saturday, September 12, 10 AM-6 PM Architects and Designers, but all interested are invited
Sunday September 13, 10 AM-2 PM Brunch and display of completed designs
LOCATION: New School of Architecture 1249 F St Downtown San Diego

On Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, Sept 11-13, a design workshop will be held at the New School of Architecture. The overall objective is to involve the greater San Diego arts & music community in developing prototypical designs for future affordable work/live space for artists and arts organizations.

The project of sdspace4art, initiated in 2005, is to develop and build specific key sites in San Diego for affordable live/work spaces for artists and arts organizations. The process for establishing live/work space will involve local architects, artists, designers, arts organization and neighborhood residents. Through a series of design workshops (called charettes) and community built projects by members of the local arts community, unique, one of a kind solutions will be realized which will reflect and preserve the diversity and culture of the people of the neighborhood.

Approximately 25 local architects will each lead different design teams on Friday night to brainstorm ideas for designs for six specific San Diego building sites. Teams will be comprised of artists, musicians, designers, developers, arts organizations, contractors and arts supporters. Saturday the architects will draw up blueprint plans based on Friday's design ideas, and Sunday's program will involve presenting the the drawings to all participants who are interested in continuing to attend through the weekend.

The result of the collaborative design process will be unique building designs responding to the needs of the artists, musicians, and organizations who will live and work in the buildings. The construction phase of the project aims to also include the community in a series of volunteer-built projects.

Artists, musicians, writers, and arts organizations interested in participating in the workshop are invited to attend. Please help us out by clicking here to fill out the survey. This event is sponsored by Synergy Art Foundation, a non-profit foundation, together with the New School of Architecture.

Featured Art along the Boulevard

The banner images created by graphic design students at SDSU were so great that the El Cajon Boulevard BIA promotions committee decided that they should be painted on utility boxes as well. Artists Crol and Werc did an excellent job of replicating the designs on the Boulevard's ever growing utility box art display.
