Last Call

If you're looking for some local, neighborhood fun, then you're sure to find it at the Last Call bar. The owners, Scott and Heather Cathalinat, and partner Rich Walker partner all agree that managing this local establishment has been very entertaining. Scott, who lives only few blocks away, wanted a great neighborhood bar to go to, which is exactly what the two have created. Like all great neighborhood bars, the regular customers live within walking distance and enjoy it because the price is right, it has a friendly atmosphere, and something unexpected is bound to take place most nights of the week. In fact, the hundreds of Polaroid pictures that cover the walls say it all!

Discovering this type of neighborhood establishment, which has been compared to the television show Cheers, is now quite rare. In fact, the story behind Rich and Scott's collaboration as partners is rather unique in itself. Starting with the Horton Grand Hotel and then Dick's Last Resort, Scott took a job at each establishment just after Rich left. They both heard stories about one other, but never actually knew eachother until they went on a group camping trip. Their friendship started almost instantaneously once they realized how many times their lives had crossed paths.

Once the opportunity arose, the two became business partners and brought a similar playful humor over to Last Call on El Cajon Boulevard. The Last Call is open from 12pm to 2am every day, except for Sunday during football season when they open at 9:30am to serve up a hearty breakfast to hungry football fans. Happy Hour is daily from 4:30 – 6:30. Monday also welcomes a rowdy crowd of football fans, then Wednesday after 8pm, some of the best music in town can be heard from a great jam band called the Tater Invaders. Thursday is Karaoke night hosted by Dino of the Atomic Cowboys, a guaranteed fun night out, and on Friday and Saturday, you can always expect a different DJ, band, comedy act or an Open Mic night, which is in development. To wrap up the week, Sunday nights will soon host Rock Band!

Scott and Rich admit that it has been a challenge to promote their bar on their section of El Cajon Boulevard. On the other hand, they feel fortunate to be surrounded by other friendly businesses in a neighborhood where almost everything one needs is within walking distance. These attributes which positively impacts the area also contributes to the success of owning a neighborhood bar on the Boulevard.

On stage: 'Ain't Misbehavin': The 'Fats' Waller Musical Show' at the Lafayette Hotel

Written by Penny Lingo, Special To The UNION-TRIBUNE

Take vintage jazz and blues, add five great vocals and a seven-piece band. Mix with choreography and costumes. Season with plenty of sass, a handful of plaintiveness, a dash of romance, a generous scoop of ribaldry and a sprinkling of silliness.

That's a recipe for "Ain't Misbehavin': The ‘Fats' Waller Musical Show," opening tomorrow at the Lafayette Hotel in San Diego. Capturing the attitude of 1920s and 1930s Harlem, the revue focuses on the music of Thomas "Fats" Waller, an icon from the era that also saw the rise of such greats as Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman.

February run dates were chosen in honor of Black History Month, says Michael Kuester, president of Fourthwall Entertainment, the local theater company that's putting on the show.

Yelp About the Boulevard

El Borrego Restaurant
4280 El Cajon Blvd

Yelper: Where do I begin? Every single aspect of this place rocks. Been there a couple times and tried their signature dishes. It's all delicious. From the rolled tacos, the Barbacoa and the lamb broth... and everything in between.

Service is spectacular, the cooks come out and give suggestions on what's really hot at the moment, the horchata is homemade and the lamb is absolutely fantastic.

It's such a nice change from the usual carne/carnitas scene and there's enough options that it'd take a week of Sundays to try all the unique combinations they offer.

One of my current favorite places to eat.

Featured Art on the Boulevard

What better way to teach children the wonders of reading than to paint images of kids reading on utility boxes next to a school? The inspiration for this design came from the Boulevard's Bookman (www.thebookman.org), who along with his crew of elves has donated over 9 million books to jails, schools, mental health services and homeless shelters. Special recognition also goes to Crol, an accomplished artist whose work can be seen on murals and utility boxes throughout the Boulevard Business Improvement District.
