El Cajon Boulevard Day at the San Diego County Fair

Monday, July 5th was El Cajon Boulevard Day at the San Diego County Fair! The El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association (BIA) administered an all out campaign to showcase the unique history and culture of business on the Boulevard. As people perused the pavilion, Ms. Boulevard, adorned in a sash and glamorous tiara provided by O'Connors Church Goods, presented guests with a sticker, inviting them to Cruise the Boulevard. Just because we weren't on El Cajon Boulevard, didn't mean that we couldn't set the scenery. In fact, one of the most exciting components of the Boulevard's display was an opportunity to pose for a picture on scooter provided by Motorsport Scooters with a back drop of the glowing pink neon Boulevard sign.

There were great samples of food from some of El Cajon Boulevard's culturally diverse and delicious restaurants such as Petrushka, a brand new Eastern European restaurant and Loving Hut, an Asian vegan restaurant. SoHo Restaurant handed out pan fried papusas and Jon, the chef at Pomegranate Russian- Georgian Restaurant welcomed everyone to a taste of Russian Georgian food. Another wonderful element of the Boulevard's display was a 1913 Rolls-Royce, which is just a glimpse of the incredible collection of early 20th Century cars on display at the JA Cooley Automotive Museum, which is located at the corner of Park Boulevard and El Cajon Boulevard.

With so many businesses worth checking out while cruising the Boulevard, The Boulevard Guide, developed just in time for El Cajon Boulevard Day, is a handy a map highlighting a small sample of the unique businesses that can only be found on the Boulevard. The map includes the recently branded Little Saigon district. Maps are available at these various locations, including the Boulevard BIA office. Also, if entrepreneurs are in need some direction, The BIA launched a new campaign called Open a Business on the Boulevard. Great information has been compiled highlighting reasons that make doing business on the Boulevard a successful endeavor. Local Boulevard business owners were also on hand at the fair to speak with anyone interested in going into business.

What many people don't realize is that El Cajon Boulevard is one of the most historic, culturally diverse and up and coming business districts in all of San Diego. It borders the great neighborhoods of North Park, University Heights, Normal Heights, Talmadge and City Heights, new businesses are opening regularly, and if you didn't know, El Cajon Boulevard is Highway 80, the first transcontinental highway which goes all the way to Georgia!!

San Diego Lantern Festival on the Boulevard

The San Diego Lantern Festival 2010 is a large scale celebration to bring together businesses, students, community groups, and visitors from all areas of San Diego County for a safe, fun, and cultural experience. The lantern festival is an ancient Vietnamese tradition that dates back to legends of the Han Dynasty over 2000 years ago in China. Although the tradition has not changed very much in the last two millennia, this Lantern Festival is special in its showcase of San Diego's diverse cultural landscape.

The San Diego Lantern Festival is a perfect mix of great food, vendors, games, an outdoor film screening, and over 15 thrilling carnival rides. There will be a fantastic line up of cultural entertainment and a breathtaking display of lanterns every evening.

Interview with Teresa Nguyen of the Little Saigon Foundation

Born and raised in City Heights, Teresa Nguyen began to get more involved in the Vietnamese community after learning more about her culture and history from other students while attending UCSD.

Now with the Little Saigon Foundation, a year old non-profit, she works with other community residents to have the seven block stretch of El Cajon Boulevard branded as Little Saigon, with a long-term goal of revitilizing the district.

Yelp About the Boulevard

Pizzeria Bruno Napolitano

4207 Park Blvd.

Yelper: Located on Park Ave, just South of El Cajon Boulevard, this mom and pop pizzeria is one of my new favorite pizza joints in town.

When you go to Bruno, don't expect to see spaghetti and meatballs or chicken parm on the menu, this is a pizza joint through and through.

There is something about hand selected specialty ingredients, fresh vegetables, meats and cheeses, that really makes a great pie. Its really no surprise that the pizza here is good, if not great. The owners Pete and Beth are always working, perfecting their food and their business. Pete is the only one that makes the pizzas, as the process is unique to Bruno, and is a family secret. From the delicious mozzarella to the unique meats and the amazing dough/crust, Pete's got this pizza thing down to a science.

I recommend damn near anything on the menu, as I have had most of it. The Antipasto salad is great, generous and oh so tasty. The bruschetta is classic with heirloom tomato's, on flash toasted fresh bread from the pizza oven. Pick any pizza that sounds good, it will be delicious. San Diego, go support our local businesses, young entrepreneurs, and eat great food!
