Luxury Reflexology

Amongst the diverse mix of small businesses on El Cajon Boulevard, a new niche business recently emerged on the Boulevard. In fact, according to Shirena Duong, owner of Luxury Reflexology, it is only one of two reflexology centers in San Diego. As defined by the Reflexology Association of Canada, reflexology is "a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and their referral areas, which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes the feet, being the primary area of application, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body."

While in college, studying business, Shirena spent many hours on her feet working retail in high heels. Her feet were in pain and she actually witnessed them swell and grow from a size six to a size seven and a half. It was this hardship on her feet that motivated her to devote endless hours of research in pursuit of a solution. What she found was foot reflexology, so she made an appointment with a specialist in Los Angeles, and it worked! Not only was it a life changing event for Shirena but she realized that this was something that many other people would dream of for their aching feet.

After graduating from CSUF, business school, Shirena left retail, with swollen and tired feet, finding success in her chosen field. In the deep recesses of her mind there had been planted a dream of establishing a foot therapy center to help the many people she knew suffering the same pain and discomfort that had plagued her in earlier years. In 2009, Shirena pursued a license in massage therapy with an emphasis in reflexology. In doing this, Shirena had her mind set on opening a reflexology center. After more than fifteen years of living away from San Diego, where Shirena grew up, she decided that she had enough of Orange County and wanted to resettle in San Diego and open Luxury Reflexology. Shirena remembered El Cajon Boulevard as a busy street in the center of many of San Diego's communities, so in March 2010, Luxury Reflexology opened its doors.

The interior is serene and spacious, with a large room occupied by 15 massage chairs strictly for reflexology, two private rooms used for parties and family gatherings, and a bathroom with shower facilities. Based on popular demand, Luxury Reflexology also offers chair and body massages. As part of a 5,000 year history of Chinese healing, Luxury Reflexology is now available on the Boulevard, and is certainly worth a visit.

Yelp About the Boulevard

Mama's Bakery & Deli
4237 Alabama St

Yelper: I've never had a bad meal there - kafta, shawarma, falafel - it's all great. As far as I know, no other place makes manakeesh, at least not like they do. Their fresh bread "off the sajj" is always wonderfully warm and fluffy. Not to mention their pretty cheap. As for ambience, it's a hole in the wall, but it's a homey hole in the wall. The dining area feels like you're eating on your grandma's front porch. I make sure to stop by there whenever I'm on El Cajon Boulevard.

Featured Art on the Boulevard

In conjunction with the newly-formed Boulevard Arts District, the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association (BIA) is interested in beautifying a future development site on El Cajon Boulevard between 43rd Street and Fairmount Avenue with a public art display along the fence line. The Boulevard Arts District is an initiative to enhance the revitalization of El Cajon Boulevard with the use of public art to highlight the Boulevard's history, as well its modern-day culture, along with events that celebrate arts and culture along the Boulevard.

The El Cajon Boulevard BIA has called upon the SDSU Graphic Design Studio class to create a mural to put on the face of a future Price Charities development project. Along the fence line of the lot, the students created an 89 ft wide by 5 ft high mural that will repeat itself three times. Because the site will remain vacant for 3 to 5 years, the goal is to have a concept that will withstand the years and convey the current and future potential of development along El Cajon Boulevard. This design will be seen on a daily basis by the community and will show El Cajon Boulevard for what is truly is. Each student in the class used their unique styles to successfully communicate a mural that depicts the diverse environment of the Boulevard and captures the spirit of the flourishing business district. The words diversity, growth, commerce, future and identity are keywords to be reflected in the design by the students.
