Lips, the Ultimate Drag Dining!
Lips, the immensely popular drag eatery, relocated from Hillcrest to its current home at 3036 El Cajon Boulevard three years ago. With a new location comes new décor! The theme here is Paris meets drag, fabulous jewel tones mixed with
pop colors, black and white stripes, gigantic martini glasses, two-twos and a lot of talking smack. In fact, Tootie, the general manager, named the bathroom color pink stiletto. Lips is like a Barbie playhouse, a place where you loose
track of yourself, of time and where your reality is transformed by beautiful drag queens who know how to bring out the playful laughter in everyone. These "girls" are professionals and they've been doing it for nine years, in heels.
In 1996, just when a new craze was building around famous drag queen legends like Ru Paul, the first Lips opened in New York City. Dining and drag have been around for decades, but this novelty of hiring performers to also wait tables in
a restaurant decked out like a diva fantasy land is how the founder Yvonne Lame set Lips apart. Her goal was to bring drag-queen fun to the masses.
The secret to their success has always been a quality product at a good price. Hot "ladies", lip syncing perfection, inappropriate
humor and stiff cocktails; a movie just doesn't compare to the special perks that come from an evening at Lips. The "ladies" at Lips certainly know how to push the envelope by doing what they can to "shock their audience into laughter
and applause!"
Tootie, aka Cher, is one of the hottest divas in the house. She embraces the freedom of developing new performances and bringing them to life. A great performer tends to have a great audience, so when the audience is crazy and fun, you'll
see the girls put in that much more. An evening at Lips is certainly a transforming process for many. People leave here with a different, more accepting outlook on drag queens, realizing that they are wonderful people, just more fun and
more shiny.
If you looking for some fun on New Years Eve, book a reservation a Lips and relive the Days of Disco.

Yelp About the Boulevard
Pomegranate Russian-Georgian Restaurant
2302 El Cajon Blvd
Yelper: The food is insanely good; it is delicious, Russian comfort food. I have had almost every entree on and off the menu and would be happy to have any of them as my last meal. It's that good! And the toad sweat dessert....truly
a unique experience! (vanilla ice cream with a spicy chocolate sauce)
One of my favorite things about this restaurant is that you drink the vodka by the inch; the waiters will bring you a bottle, measure it, and then at the end of the meal, measure how many inches you drank and charge you for that. And it is
good, smooth Russian vodka, no mixers needed, so more than once, we may have finished the bottle...
It is a unique experience; the servers are Russian and their demeanor may be off-putting for some (no-nonsense, stern, rushed) but they are always good and helpful. It is a small restaurant that fills up with groups quickly so definitely
make reservations and take cash. Last time I was there, they did take CC but charge a service fee for using them.
And take a Sharpie so you can leave your mark on the wall!

Featured Utility Box
Werc is an extraordinary artist. Along with his participation in the Boulevard Arts District, he has also created public murals throughout the country and the world. In this fifth utility box project on El Cajon Boulevard Werc
created a mural on three boxes which relate to the resources that the AjA Project offers to this community. The AjA Project is a non-profit organization located on El Cajon Boulevard near the boxes. The AjA Project provides innovative
media arts and photography-based educational programs to refugee youth in City Heights. Photography is a medium for the youth to explore identity and develop communication and leadership skills, both for the individual and their
community.
Werc emigrated from Juarez, Mexico at a young age. He understands first-hand that moving to another country can be a life-altering experience. Embracing the art of graffiti was a creative outlet that helped Werc discover his
self-identity and develop future goals. He admires the unique opportunity refugee youth have through AJA because as he states, "motivating kids through art is powerful."
