Archival Sound

If North Park is the arts community of San Diego, then it's no wonder El Cajon Boulevard is attracting so many new creative businesses, including Archival Sound, a recording studio. Located in an unassuming strip of retail next to the Live Wire exists Archival Sound, where many of San Diego's musicians go to get their music mixed, mastered and produced.

Three years ago, five friends, all sound engineers and musicians set-out to build a recording studio and pursue careers in sound recording. This September, Ian Woodward bought Archival Sound in an effort to build the business and pursue his lifelong passion of "recording music and making a product."

As a young man, Ian started recording his own indie-rock bands' music on a 4-track cassette player. He pursued a degree in music technology at UCSD, giving himself the opportunity to work with more professional gear. He didn't act on his career goals immediately out of college, but continued to record his own music. In 2000, Ian furthered his education by enrolling in Alchemia, a recording school in London.

When Ian returned to San Diego, he worked at Singing Serpent, writing music and recording. Then Ian's dream of running his own recording studio came true. He jumped at the opportunity, knowing that Archival Sound would offer him endless time to delve in the art of recording. Ian particularly takes pleasure in working with solo artists to enhance their albums with a full arrangement of sounds.

Working alongside his friends, who have all been in bands for 15 plus years, Ian is proud of the expanded services that they can provide for their clients. Each partner has firsthand knowledge of what it feels like as a musician to go into a recording studio, and stress over time and money. At Archival Sound, Ian and his partners do their best to create a comfortable, creative environment to ensure a quality product.

Yelp About the Boulevard

Flavors of East Africa
2302 El Cajon Blvd

Yelper: Went to their new restaurant last night for a friend's birthday. I was super excited to try it out since I had never had Kenyan food before. It was all great! I had the beef masala, as well as 3 different appetizers for the table (don't remember what they were called). I loved everything. Best part was that I know it was authentic because my Kenyan friend brought us there and gave the food a thumbs up! The owner/cook was really nice and talked with our table for a little while after dinner. You gotta try it!
