Flavors of East Africa

The outstanding array of restaurants on El Cajon Boulevard continues to expand, and as a 2011 New Year bonus, Flavors of East Africa has come onto the scene. The location on the northwest corner of El Cajon Boulevard Louisiana St. in North Park compliments an already outstanding array of restaurants in the area. You may have already experienced the food around town since June, the owner, has been slowly growing his business from the ground up by presenting Flavors of East Africa at local farmers markets since 1995.

June, who is from Kenya, says his collard greens will blow your mind. Cabbage, eggplant, lentils, hominy and red beans, are also some of the most common ingredients found in East African dishes. Spices include cardamom, cloves and zambuda. The staple bread of East Africa, which is made fresh at the restaurant is called chapatti, and is often described as an African tortilla. June as well as so many other people who love East African food appreciate the how fresh, healthy and well balance the meals are.

June claims that his passion for food came by default. He was raised in an independent household. At eight years old, he cooked his own food and by eleven he was helping his mother in the kitchen, prepping food for large meals. He studied accounting in India, and besides missing his native food, June opted to cook at home in order save money.

When June moved to San Diego, he lived in an apartment building on Ohio Street in North Park. June's neighbors could smell the scent of exotic food coming from his kitchen. For extra money, June began cooking meals on a regular basis for his neighbors. When an opportunity arose to work with a local fisherman at the Hillcrest Farmer's Market, this became June's first glimpse of this new business opportunity. He realized that there wasn't any East African food sold at the market, and sought out to fill this niche by opening his own catering company. Ten years later, June has grown his business to service six different farmer's markets, a cafeteria located at SDSU, and now owns his first restaurant, on the Boulevard!

Yelp About the Boulevard

Til-Two Club - 4746 El Cajon Boulevard
Yelper:
The Til-Two club is a great place to see a band! We drove down from LA to see Northern Ireland's finest band ever--The Undertones--rather than see them at the dreadful Echoplex in Echo Park. Even though we didn't get home until 4am, we're glad we did!

The sound is great. The semi-outdoors room where the bands plays is very intimate. Everyone is nice. The DJ played The Simpletones and The Zeros. It's a cool place. Go there!
