Adventure Imaging

Adventure Imaging may look like a slick new business that just opened up on El Cajon Boulevard, but in fact it's been in existence for more than three decades in San Diego. In the age of digital, things change rapidly, which according to the owner Bob Dietz, is exactly why running a print shop has been so much fun. Originally, Adventure Imagining began as a one hour photo shop located next to the El Cortez when the El Cortez was the convention center of downtown. This was also the age of display boards before PowerPoint became the chosen tool for presentations. During those days lawyers were his main clientele.

Competition from big box retailers like Wal-Mart and Costco were taking a toll on Bob's photo business, so he began to explore the potential of specialized digital print marketing materials. From magnets and stickers, business cards, apparel and outdoor signage, think marketing and think Adventure Imaging because they produce everything. With a user-friendly website and search engine optimization, Adventure Imaging is not only successful locally; Bob receives orders from all over the country.

When the rent tripled in Mission Hills, Bob and his long friend Rich, who owns a tanning and hair salon, were in search of a new location that would work for the both of them together. Financially, it is more feasible for Bob and Rich to share the rent and believe it or not the environment lends itself to crossover business. Since Adventure Imaging opened on El Cajon Boulevard walk in business has tripled from its previous location. Bob believes that because housing is more affordable in this area of town, it is a landing ground for entrepreneurs who have now become his most frequent customers.

Over and over, customers tell Bob that they are so glad that they don't have to go to Kinko's. With a high quality product, friendly customer service and a business owner who takes pride in the presentation of his shop, it is no wonder that Adventure Imagining stands out from their competitors.

By Maureen Cavanaugh, Hank Crook
KPBS, These Days

Starting and maintaining a small business has never been a particularly easy thing to do and right now, it's just about as hard as it gets. With consumer spending down, businesses are struggling with issues ranging from how to handle overstocked inventories to how to create a recession business plan.

The group of volunteer small business advisors that make up the organization called SCORE have found themselves pretty busy in recent weeks. Their seminars are filling up with business owners who want to survive this recession, and even with some very plucky people who want to start new businesses despite the economy.

Guests:
Monty Dickinson, president of the San Diego chapter of SCORE. SCORE is a non-profit association that offers free advice to small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Matt Gordon, owner of the Urban Solace restaurant in North Park.

Yelp About The Boulevard

The Soda Bar
3615 El Cajon Blvd

Yelper: The people here were nice and personable. The bands added a great touch and the remodel makes it cozy I thought. There is no sketchiness to this bar whatsoever and really it's not a dive in my eyes. They had several beers on tap and they were not overpriced. It's an awesome place and you should check it out!

No Time to Waste, No Water to Waste

The San Diego region is experiencing an unprecedented water supply crisis. There are environmental stresses, including the ongoing drought in the Colorado River basin and reduced snow pack and runoff in Northern California. In addition to these environmental stresses, court-ordered pumping restrictions on the State Water Project have continued to reduce the amount of water that can be delivered to our region. San Diego's water wholesalers have already announced that they will reduce their water deliveries to the area. Since San Diego imports 85-90 percent of its water, these conditions put considerable stress on the City's water system.

Note to business owners: Landscape irrigation is limited to no more than three assigned days per week from June 1 - Oct 31. Businesses can only water on Monday, Wednesday & Friday.
