LISC Sponsors Workshop to Address Need for Affordable Live/Work Space for Local Artists
The term "struggling artists" has been around for centuries – and for good reason. Artists often find it difficult to afford rent because their incomes are so precarious. But artists, and arts districts, help to preserve local culture
and character, stimulate local jobs and economic development, and engender community pride and business vitality. That's why city leaders, developers, and organizations such as CCDC and the Redevelopment Agency will all participate in
important learning opportunities on December 10 and 11 on how to create affordable work/live space for artists.
ArtSpace, a national developer that specializes in teaching communities how to address this need, will lead the workshops thanks to a grant provided by San Diego LISC (Local Initiative Support Corporation), long a grantor, lender, and
supporter of helping San Diego communities thrive. A smaller grant was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.
ArtSpace will provide a two-day workshop on December 10 and 11, 2008, at the Centro Cultural de la Raza, 2125 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101, in which art leaders from four communities will be the core participants. These communities
include Barrio Logan/East Village (The Believe Project under Synergy Art Foundation), North Park, (North Park Main Street), El Cajon Boulevard corridor, (The El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association) and San Ysidro (Casa
Familiar).
City leaders in the areas of finance, civic matters and arts and culture will participate in focus group sessions during the two-day agenda. Representatives from CCDC, the Redevelopment Agency, San Diego Housing Commission, San Diego
Foundation, Save Our Heritage Organization, as well as local civic leaders from these districts will attend. There will also be a session for developers, architects, and community leaders to learn about ArtSpace's approach to integrating
affordable live/work space for artists.
A public meeting will be held on December 10, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the World Beat Center, 2125 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101, to encourage dialogue from artists, arts organizations, public officials, community and resident leaders,
developers, architects, and citizens. For more information, please contact beryl@theboulevard.org.
Yelp About the Boulevard
Dao Son Noodle House
2322 El Cajon Blvd
Yelper: I love this place. My boyfriend and I went because we'd read so many good reviews and were intrigued. We split the big Kirin, an order of salad rolls, the garlic chicken and the catfish with eggplant. Everything was
amazing and I'm still thinking about that catfish...plus we went home with pounds of leftovers. We could have just gotten one entree between the two of us and been fine; even one of those chunky salad rolls would have done the trick for
me.
The service was great, the waiter made us laugh, the decor is laid-back Asian homestyle and the food was spicy, saucy, fried and served with plenty of steamed rice. In other words, pretty much my ideal eatery: doesn't get better than
this.
