Progressive Health Services

When Suzann Gage, a volunteer clinician at Progressive Health Services, was 19 she studied fine arts at Illinois State University. During that time she became active in Self-Help Clinics where women learned more about heir bodies through self-examinations. Inspired by this work she left Illinois in 1973, traveling on the plane for the first time in her life, to join like-minded women at the Los Angeles Feminist Women's Health Center where she worked for 11 years. Since that time she received her credentials as a nurse practitioner, OB/GYN, nutritionist, acupuncturist and an herbalist.

Her main focus has always been on the subject of wellness and health education through an integrated medical practice, incorporating the best of mainstream medicine and alternative and holistic medicine. She encourages people to participate in their health care and learn about their bodies, which is what a lot of her patients come looking for.

In 1985, Suzann co-founded Wholistic Health for Women, a 501 c (3) located in West Hollywood. It was during this time that HIV testing had just become available. For many years people believed that the risk of HIV and AIDS only existed amongst gay men. Suzann believes that Magic Johnson was one of the key people instrumental in opening the world to the risk of HIV to the public at large. The organization decided to diversify their clientele by opening up the clinic to both men and women and adopting a new name: Progressive Health Services. Only one other LA facility offered wide scale HIV testing at that time with a 1-month wait for an appointment and a 2-week wait for results. In an effort to meet the needs of the changing environment, Progressive Health Services became the second clinic in Southern California to offer HIV testing and greatly streamlined the process by offering walk-in service and test results in within 3 days, something unheard of in those days.

Currently Progressive Health offers 15-minute HIV results! They also provide comprehensive walk in STD screening as well.

Suzann continues to serve a diverse population of people from early teens through adulthood. Most of her patients are uninsured or under-insured and they come seeking confidential health care. Her patients find their services affordable and reasonable for the amount of time spent with a person. The most popular health services people seek are annual physical exams, comprehensive lab testing, Pap smears, fertility services, acupuncture, and nutritional consultations.

In 2001 Progressive Health Services relocated their main headquarters to San Diego. After living in Los Angeles for almost 30 years, Suzann decided to move to San Diego as well. She appreciates the beauty of San Diego, which she believes has all the amenities of a large city with a small city feel. In seeking out a visible central location for the clinic, El Cajon Boulevard was a great choice. Progressive Health Services is located inside a bright and cheerful craftsman house with a lovely rose garden and white picket fence. Suzann often receives complements from the neighbors for helping to improve the area, and based on the extensive amount of work she's done in the field of health and wellness, she is also doing a lot to improve people's lives.

Independently Sponsored Women's Expo On Its Way Just in Time for Holiday Shopping

Synecdoche Communications to Host "Girl's Day In" at Lafayette Hotel

The recently formed San Diego-based Synecdoche Communications has announced that its first event will take place on November 14, 2009 at the Lafayette Hotel. Billed as the Girl's Day In, the show & shopping event is intended to be among the first local independent business-promoting women's expos to be held in San Diego and will effectively be an independent shopping mall for the day. The day will bring together a broad spectrum of sellers and service providers from the plethora of arenas catering to women by including vendors from the worlds of fashion, food, fitness, music, finance, health & well-being, beauty and myriad others. Admission is free, though visitors are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and/or clothing to be donated to local charities. There will be more than 14 raffles throughout the day with more than $7000 in products and services up for grabs. Additionally, the first 25 people in attendance will receive a swag bag filled with a variety of free products and discounts and the first 200 people who RSVP online will be given a special gift at the door.

The idea for the Girl's Day In came to the group after participating in and attending various shows, both in San Diego and elsewhere, which featured either fashion, lifestyle or other businesses, but rarely had them all together under the same umbrella. Synecdoche Communications partner, Lara Severson says of the event, "As residents of San Diego we have loved seeing the arts & fashion community and its offerings expanding exponentially over the last several years and have really enjoyed the variety of events and opportunities that has opened to the community in San Diego. This event is not intended as competition for any of those great offerings, but rather as a compliment to them. It is really a way to bring many of the worlds that interest women together in one forum. We are incredibly excited by the potential and possibility in this event."

Synecdoche Communications was founded in late September 2009 by Lara Severson and Sarah Sweeney-Gerardi and serves the quickly growing community of independent musicians, designers, artists, not-for-profits and others who en-rich the San Diego community. The partners have a diversity of backgrounds including work in fashion, marketing, small business, politics & public affairs, development, music and retail communications and look forward to helping their clients find and use their voice to its fullest potential.

Located at 2223 El Cajon Blvd in San Diego, the Lafayette Hotel & Suites San Diego was where Hollywood's most glamorous stars came night after night to what was the hotel's fashionable Mississippi Ballroom to drink, dine and dance to the music of Ted Fio Rito and other top-drawer big bands. The hotel's popularity and tradition of gracious hospitality continues today. This elegant Colonial-style mansion is a San Diego landmark and has maintained its
elegant charm in serving as your Historic San Diego Hollywood star connection.

Live Wire 17th Anniversary Bicycle Bar Tour

Traditional etiquette mandates that whenever one's birthday rolls around, the entire block is invited over for barbecue, canned beer and some variety of game that involves tossing objects in the back yard. Live Wire owners Sam Chammas and Joe Austin, however, have forged a new annual custom by inviting one and all to take to the streets -- and surrounding bars -- on bikes.

The journey began at high noon at Live Wire, where the multigenerational 30 or so cyclists picked through pot luck pasta salad: necessary carbs for the safari that lay ahead.

First up was the most dangerous leg of the day's excursion, the 50-foot trek across El Cajon Boulevard to Gilly's, where complimentary hot dogs were steaming in a crock pot by the pool tables, and the Raiders game was well underway on the fan-filled patio (which, as far as Chammas is concerned, is the Shangri-La of North Park).

Then it was north on Park Avenue to University Heights, for shrimp and bacon Bloody Marys and pork rinds at the borough's newcomer, Small Bar.

The pack wobbled around the corner to Cheers, a teeny pool bar that's actually smaller than Small Bar. It could easily serve as the shower barn annex of the Swiss Family Robinson home, complete with wraparound Tahitian mural inside.

Then it was onward to wood-paneled medieval wonderland Kadan, where at least one of the several senior citizen regulars actually fled when the herd of middle-aged whippersnappers tumbled through the door.

After a taco and Tecate pit stop at Cantina Mayahuel, the party pedaled eastward on Adams to a Guinness marathon at the Ould Sod, where we actually heard -- and survived -- Oasis' "What's the Story Morning Glory" in its entirety.

Then, before everyone remembered that Monday was only hours away and cops do indeed dish out DUIs for drunken cycling, came the pizza grand finale at velophile embassy Blind Lady Ale House. -- Derrik Chinn, SignOnSanDiego

Yelp About The Boulevard

Harar Ethiopian Restaurant
2432 El Cajon Boulevard

Yelper:
Wow. This place is great. For those of you who have not had ethiopian food before, it's indescribable. You eat with your hands, scooping things up with this thin, spongy bread made of a grain called Teff. The food is flavorful, aromatic, strong in flavors, some of it is spicy, but none of it is heavy. I can say this is one of the best Ethiopian places I've been to, but then again, every one I've ever been to has been excellent--so I will just say--this is EASILY one of the best restaurants I've been to in the San Diego area.

We ordered the platter for two where they bring out all the different stuff, and the food was absolutely EXQUISITE. Everything tasted great...it was just the right amount of food (we were hungry). And although it was spicy, and a bit alien tasting, and we stuffed our faces...the food sat quite well in our stomachs, probably because it had a great balance of nutrition and was fairly healthy: we came out of here feeling content and quite good.

Price? VERY reasonable. Downright cheap.

The atmosphere is kinda cool too...very simple...half-outdoors, but has a nice sort of vibe to it.

In short? I love this place. And we are very grateful that this place is right around the corner from us.
