Uppercuts

Uppercuts, a new beauty salon and barbershop on El Cajon Boulevard offers a range of services, including haircuts, shaves and hair coloring. As an added bonus, a hot towel and relaxing neck massage is included.

Peter, the owner of Uppercuts, previously owned a Jamaican Restaurant in San Diego. He felt the location didn't suit his business well. So, in seeking out a new business venture, Peter realized that location was key and they couldn't go wrong with a barbershop. As he says, "everyone needs a hair cut and everyone wants to look good." With a lot of drive-by traffic and pedestrian activity, El Cajon Boulevard was a perfect fit.

Months before opening, the space was fully renovated. The metal bars were removed from the windows and Peter added hardwood flooring, custom styling stations, a fresh paint job and even two flat screen televisions. The shop looks spotless, but the most important thing to him is to treat the costumers with special care.

This is a diverse barbershop that caters to the community. With haircuts starting at $16 and $10 for children, the goal is to meet the needs of the community and make sure everyone feels welcome. All of their barbers and stylists have over 15 years experience and continue to build upon their professional training by attending workshops and hair shows. If you want to make an appointment, call 619.283.1790 and someone will be there to help you.

The name Uppercuts comes from Peter's favorite barbershop in his homeland of Jamaica. He always appreciated their shampoo, neck massage and most of all, the friendly service. One customer would fly down from Florida once a month just for a haircut. Peter's goal is to reach similar customer satisfaction with Uppercuts.

PASSPORT THROUGH TIME

During 3rd Annual Passport Road Trip Event, Oct. 18, 2008

Historic Highway 80 from the harbor to the backcountry will rumble once again as the 3rd Annual Passport Road Trip takes place on Saturday, October 18, 2008, from 9 am – 2:30 pm. The public is invited to join the "cruise" which will originate at The San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park and end with opportunity drawings at Viejas Outlet Center at 3 pm. Dave Scott, KUSI's beloved weatherman, will be doing his live broadcast at the Registration Site at the Automotive Museum from 7 AM to 9:30 AM. There will be morning refreshments, music, information on the event, membership applications, and merchandise for sale. As a special feature "Green Cars" will be on display at the museum…Smart Cars for sure! It will be a wonderful time for the Past, Present, and Future of American automotive travel.

Viejas is also hosting its 4th Annual BBQ Challenge Cookout, "Smokn' in the Park," where guests will be able to enjoy delicious BBQ meals in conjunction with Historic Highway 80 Displays and prize drawings. Entertainment will be provided by County Western star Crystal Shawanda and there will be a special parking area for Road Trip participants.

The family road trip along nostalgic Highway Route 80 offers everyone a chance to enjoy a piece of American Heritage as caravans of classic cars, sports cars, motorcycles and family autos "cruise" from the west in Balboa Park, proceed through "Passport Pit Stops" and terminate at Viejas Outlet Center off Willows Road east of Alpine. Another group of drivers will begin in Holtville, California and proceed through several Pit Stops in El Centro, the Imperial Valley, and through the mountains and valleys of the San Diego backcountry, coming westward to Viejas on a "Poker Run". Drivers will collect playing cards and assemble them into the best poker hand for a chance at winning prizes.

"We encourage the public to bring kids, grand kids and friends to rediscover the many treasures along Old Highway 80, cities and small towns that were largely bypassed when Interstate 8 was built." said Eric Lund, chair of the event.

To participate in the "Passport" opportunity contest, drivers should check in at Balboa Park. Drivers can then choose from among the remaining Pit Stops to have their "Passport" stamped to be eligible for the opportunity to win valuable prizes during the drawing at the Outlet Center. They may also travel further eastward and then reverse to join the fun at Viejas. New Pit Stops this year include the Chicken Pie Shop on El Cajon Blvd., Iron Mountain Outfitters on La Mesa Blvd., El Cajon Harley-Davidson and Phillip's Hobbies on East Main Street in El Cajon, and the Flinn Restaurant & Bar on Old Highway 80 in Flinn Springs.

It's time to turn up the heat on energy savings

Early fall is an ideal time to prepare for winter heating. This is especially true if you're concerned about natural gas prices, which are expected to be higher this winter than last winter.

Get cash back on new equipment

One of the smartest ways to ease the impact of higher natural gas prices on your company's operations is to improve energy efficiency.

Among the 140 gas and electric measures that may qualify for rebates through SDG&E's Small Business Super Saver and Express Efficiency programs are: tankless (instantaneous) water heaters that conserve both natural gas and water; storage water heaters; boilers; insulation for pipes and tanks; and commercial food service equipment such as ovens, steam cookers, fryers and griddles.

Take advantage of 0% financing

Energy-efficiency upgrades also may qualify for SDG&E's On-Bill Financing. This program offers 0% financing for up to five years – and the convenience of paying on your SDG&E bill – for measures that cost $5,000 to $50,000.

Before buying new equipment or starting energy-efficiency projects, be sure to call SDG&E's Energy Information Center at 1-800-644-6133 to verify that your upgrades qualify for available rebates or incentives. You'll also find rebate information and applications posted online at the Energy Savings Center, www.sdge.com/esc, along with links to training opportunities, online tools and tips, all designed to help your business save energy.

These programs are funded by California utility customers and administered by SDG&E under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission.

Yelp about The Boulevard

Pho Van
4233 El Cajon Blvd

Yelper: Pho Van has got to be one of my preferred places to get pho in town, by far.

I love the fact that they don't make their broth super strong here because, in my opinion - it should be a delicate soup that one can alter to their own likiing at the table. But trust me, it's definitely flavorful enough for you to leave and smell like pho all day long, easy.

I always order pho tai chin (with well done beef brisket & rare steak) and I like that the steak comes on the side so that you can choose how cooked you want it. Their soda chanh is good and so is everything else I've managed to try.

Great hole in the wall, definitely authentic - and down to earth... not pretentious. The prices are decent as well. click here for more yelp reviews
