Recovery Team Workshop Set for Thursday, May 20

Please make sure you can attend the next Tijuana River Valley Recovery Team workshop on Thursday, May 20, from 9 a.m. until noon at the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board. The agenda will be in the normal format with each of the four Action Teams meeting for the first half of the session, followed by a reporting out to the plenary group. This is sure to be vibrant meeting with the Restoration Committee reporting on the first Visioning Workshop and plans for the second. It has been two months since the last regular workshop, so the Border, Cleanup and Binational Action Teams will likely have much more to add to the discussion, too!


April 20 Visioning Session Set the Stage for the Next Steps

The first Visioning Workshop on April 20, 2010, set the stage for the Restoration Action Team's efforts to create a vision for the Tijuana River Valley. This first session included presentations by eleven of the Recovery Team's participating agencies to identify their past, present and future projects, their vision for the valley, and potential opportunities for cooperation and collaboration. The session was facilitated by Gita Kapahi, Director of the Office of Public Participation for the State Water Resources Control Board. The following presentations were made: San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, City Of San Diego Storm Water Department, U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission, County Of San Diego, Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, California State Parks, San Diego County Water Authority, City Of Imperial Beach, Binational Perspective, U.S. Navy, U.S. Customs And Border Patrol/Department Of Homeland Security. A full update will be available at the May 20 Recovery Team Workshop. Available information and presentations can be found on the Recovery Team's "Visioning" web page along with additional photos. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 23. The site hasn't been determined.


Recovery Team Presents at Army Corps Workshop

On April 21, several members of the Recovery Team participated in a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planning workshop at the Hyatt Manchester in downtown San Diego. Recovery Team Co-Chairs Grant Destache and Carl Nettleton provided an overview of the Recovery Team's efforts. Cleanup Action Team Co-Chair Tony Heinrichs provided an overview of the work to clean out accumulated sediment in the Pilot Channel prior to this winter's rains. City of San Diego Storm Water Department Supervising Public Information Officer Bill Harris led the group on a tour of the Tijuana River Valley, and Chris Peregrine from Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve described the work completed and plans for the estuary. Border Team member Dave Badger from the Border Patrol provided an overview of the border fence. The meeting was arranged by Ed DeMesa, Co-Chair of the Restoration Action Team.


Tijuana Forum Addresses Solid Waste

On May 12-14, the a solid waste forum was held in Tijuana called "Rethinking to Renew Tijuana." The event was organized in cooperation with the City of Tijuana, the Colegio de la Frontera Norte, the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Centro Cultural Tijuana, and several not-for-profit organizations.

USEPA and SEMARNAT Developing New Border Program
 
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT), and their bi-national partners are coordinating work towards development of a new US-Mexico Border Program. The EPA seeks recommendations and comments that can help frame the next program, building on past successes, considering emerging issues, and addressing the following:

1. TransBorder Goals/Objectives
2. Organizational Structure
3. Communications
4. Leveraging Resources
