REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR THE SECOND VISIONING WORKSHOP ON SEPTEMBER 22
The Tijuana River Valley Recovery Team continues to move forward with identifying options for the future of the Tijuana River Valley. On September 22, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the team will host its second visioning workshop at the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve Training Center, 301 Caspian Way, Imperial Beach, CA 91932.

The first Visioning Workshop highlighted the need for more in-depth coordination among the responsible parties for each resource management area. Attendees at the September 22 workshop will be asked to identify the challenges and opportunities to integrate recovery across resource management responsibilities and across the international border.

Key items on the agenda include reports from agency working meetings that have been held over the past few months to discuss the following:
* Ecology and Monitoring
* Trails/Recreation
* Stormwater and Sediment/Trash
* Regulatory

These reports will be followed by public discussion and questions and answers, and a GIS mapping session. Following lunch,there will be breakout groups and a prioritization exercise.

To register for the meeting, please click on the link below. The registration fee is $10 for those participating in the lunch option.

Advisory Group Releases Report on Environmental Issues along the U.S.-Mexico Border
The Good Neighbor Environmental Board (GNEB), an independent presidential advisory committee to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has released the report, "A Blueprint for Action on the US-Mexico Border." The report gives recommendations on how to maintain strong environmental protection measures along the border.

TRNERR Tests Flow of Trash and Sediment from Mexico
The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve's Watershed Program released 700 probes in the watershed south of the border earlier this year. Because the project did not produce the data desired, a second round of 2,000 probes will be released in the near future, each with an antenna. The data from the probes will be captured in coordination with the CalIT2 program at UCSD.

Fish and Wildlife Service Grants Supporting Valley Projects
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service funded three cooperative agreements for the Tijuana River Valley this year totaling $47,000. The Southwest Wetlands Interpretive Association (SWIA) received funding for restoration and enhancement of riparian habitat along the Tijuana River at Hollister Bridge. A California State Parks project was funded to repair or replace fencing in the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve and Silver Strand State Beach to protect nesting western snowy plovers and California least terns. SWIA also received a "Connecting People With Nature" grant to support the Reserve's Volunteer and Community Outreach Program.
