Access Corvallis
With tight budgets come increased pressure to build meeting attendance, so in tough economic times, it's especially important that everyone can find out about and attend your next event.
One-fifth (54 million!) of us are impaired in some way, but what we all have in common is that everyone wants to fully participate in meetings.
Corvallis properties ensure that your meeting is enjoyable by all:
Making it easy for attendees to tell you what they need during the registration process eliminates unfortunate surprises later on. Assistant Director of
OSU Conference Services
Donna Williams' strategy is to anticipate potential problems and offer solutions ahead of time. "We are seeing an increase in special food preparation requests," such as non-gluten and vegan meals, she notes. A customizable in-house
online registration system captures the information her team needs to provide customized service.
Salbasgeon Suites and Conference Center offers five ADA-compliant sleeping rooms on the first floor – in addition to fully accessible meeting spaces – to ensure that mobility-impaired attendees can navigate easily, reports Director of
Sales
Chris Nusbaum.
The
Hilton Garden Inn, Oregon State University's conference headquarter hotel, offers "nine ADA accessible rooms, with features ranging from roll-in showers to low peep holes," says Director of Sales
Leigha Thomas. Meeting space, parking, and restrooms at her property are all at ground level, which pleases elderly guests as well as mobility device users.
The
LaSells Stewart Center at OSU makes auxiliary hearing devices available as a matter of course, and all cleaning products at Salbasgeon Suites and Conference Center are provided by Ecolab and minimize irritating chemicals.
Other tips for an accessible meeting without distractions:
· Served meals work for everyone – and can be less expensive.
· Provide an Accessibility Ambassador at the registration table.
· Post plenty of signs – use a combination of pictures, printed words, and Braille.
· Use 16-point type for all printed materials.
The
ADA Checklist for Existing Facilities is an important resource. For more information on Oregon ADA requirements, contact Denise Spielman at
spielmad@ohsu.edu.
