Did you know? Cars for Homes™ Recycles |
|
|
Although a number of vehicles that are donated to Habitat's Cars for Homes™ wholesale for $1,000 to $12,000, about half of the vehicles donated are at the end of their
useful lives as modes of transportation. But that doesn't mean they aren't important donations: vehicles are the most heavily recycled consumer product.
Each year, the steel industry recycles more than 14 million tons of steel from end-of-life vehicles. This is equal to nearly 13.5 million automobiles. Recycling steel saves both energy and natural resources. Last year, 67% of the steel
manufactured in North America was recycled steel. Recycling one ton of steel conserves 2500 pounds of iron ore, 1400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone. (Source: Steel Recycling Institute).
With energy savings at all points of the production cycle (mining, manufacturing, and disposal of steel products), the steel industry saves the equivalent energy to power about 18 million households a year.
For many reasons, recycling donated vehicles is a good thing: for the environment (it rids communities of junked vehicles), for energy conservation, and for the average donor. It's fast, easy, and the donor gets to deduct the fair market
value (up to $499) of any donation that sells for less than $500.
