Why build it? |
|
|
by Laura Yates, volunteer
Last fall
Horizon Hobby offered an incredible opportunity to their employees: to work on a Habitat house. This was a wonderful experience for me, one I am hoping to repeat.
I learned a LOT. We put trusses up (by hand), put the sheeting on the roof, put the fascia on, the windows and the doors in. My main job was cutting 2x4's. Lots of cuts, lots of angles, lots of lifting and climbing up and down ladders and
on the roof…but a LOT of fun and very rewarding.

You can tell the day I was wearing my sunglasses, as I must have sweat off all of the sunscreen! My face is a little pink on my nose and cheeks, and it looks like I have raccoon eyes where my sunglasses were! However, where my heart
should be is this glowing wonderful BEST feeling of all… HOPE.
I'd always wanted to be a part of such a giving organization, to volunteer my time to help someone else get a hand up in life. My husband and I are really blessed with so much in our lives. Family, friends, jobs…all encompassed in our
home.
The best gift we can give to each other is being a part of a bigger gift, to give another family even a slice of the happiness we have. Not because they will have the "stuff" of a house, but because they will have the important things in
life: a safe refuge to call home, a security in life, a commitment to our community, and a place to put their family roots.
Our children also came by to see what we were doing, and to hand out popsicles on a really hot day. Of course, now every time they see a house being built they proudly tell everyone that Momma and Daddy are building it!
My parents taught me if you can't do it with your whole heart, it ain't worth doing. With triplets, it takes a lot for us to get things done. My Dad watched the trio so Jason and I could volunteer at the house. Just goes to show you how
many people it really does take to put a house together. Not just the people there, but the people covering their jobs so they can be there, and the grandparents babysitting so the parents can volunteer.
Perhaps this will also inspire and open up a window to a relationship with God. They will have seen the kindness others have shown them, and can mirror that kindness to shower on others. Such a positive potential impact on future
generations. We were blessed by God, and helped by family and friends so much along the way, what a perfect opportunity to give back to someone else. And it all starts with building a stronger foundation… TOGETHER. |
