Actor/writer/comedian Robert Dubac (Loving, Growing Pains, Different Strokes, Life Goes On) delves into the "no-womans" land of the male "intellect." Using perfect comic timing and five unique characters (the chauvinist, the fisherman, the ladies man, the sensitive guy and the foreign exchange student) Dubac attempts to answer the question: "What do women want?" Since its San Diego debut in 2005, Dubac's hilarious show has become a worldwide phenomenon!

This show contains adult language and themes

The year's kicking off in a really fun way:
With pearls and a ring and a taste of Patté.

PATTE FEVER!

To quote the Jersey Boys, Oh, What a Night! There were 500 people at the 11th annual Patté Awards for Theater Excellence, bathed in purple light, surrounded by flowers and encircled in a communal spirit of good will. The energy and passion in the room were palpable. In this first year of producing the event independently, I was thrilled to be able to perpetuate this San Diego tradition. The past four months proved quite a journey, but what a spectacular destination! So many people came forward to help, to volunteer, to contribute time, money, energy, goods and services, it touched and moved and humbled me. And I was, as always, so happy that, through the event, people were introduced to new theaters and theatermakers. Several told me their faith in theater (as insiders or outsiders) was renewed. It was more gratifying than I can say. And having County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price declare January 14 Patté Awards Day was extra icing on an already-elaborate cake.

The full list of winners is below, but a brief note on the Special Awards.

The Patté Angel Award went to Dea and Osborn Hurston, who are not only angels to the entire theater community, but were especially important to this year's Pattés: she as Chair/gatherer of the esteemed Honorary Committee, he exerting his influence to bring in Union Bank as the title sponsor of the event. They are incredible friends of the arts, and Friends of Patté.         . .. Read all of Pat's column at www.sdtheatre.com

Behind the Scenes
by Jenni Prisk

Hello Everyone, and a very happy 2008!  Can you believe we are half way through January already?  Get those holiday shopping lists ready, it'll be on us before we know it.

Our trip to Peru was amazing!  The opportunity to work with the people of Pisco who lost everything during the August earthquake was humbling and eye-opening.  We are a very lucky people here.  I discovered muscles I didn't know I had after shoveling rubble and building brick walls.  But the spirit of camaraderie exhibited by young people from all over the world who had come to help pulled us through the hardest day.     . .. Community Theatre Beat
by Hitch

Ordinary People - OnStage Playhouse, Chula Vista, CA

About two years ago the Jarrett family suffered the loss of their oldest son Buck, while sailing with his younger brother Conrad. A freak storm dismasted the sailboat. Buck, who was a sports jock and all round fun guy, drowned. Judith Guest's book, Ordinary People, dramatized by Nancy Gilsenan, explores the effect of this tragedy on the family.

San Diego Theatre Teen Perspective
by Alice Cash

The award winning San Diego Repertory Theatre recently created a program similar to La Jolla Playhouse's Page to Stage, where they take a new play and workshop it in front of a live audience. Now in the second year, Todd Salovey, the Rep's Associate Artistic Director, adapted and directed the new play, The Blessing of a Broken Heart, based on the award-winning non-fiction book by Sherri Mandell.

The show tells the story of an American mother who moves her family to Jerusalem to rediscover adventure and family time. After they move to Israel they fall victims to a 3,000 year-old conflict. The show reveals the Mother's life before the tragedy and later how she is able to recover. The heart-wrenching story also displays beautiful pictures projected on the wall and music from Israel. ...   . .. Read all of Alice's Column at www.sdtheatre.com
