Stress!!!

Imagine you are walking down a street and unexpectedly see someone you know. You are happy to see each other. Your friend asks, "How are you?" You answer, "I am so stressed. How are you?" Your friend says, "Oh, me too! How are the kids?"

Did you notice that segue right over the stress thing into the next topic of the conversation? Don't worry, I'm not going be an advocate for a detailed list every time stress comes up in conversation. There is a time and place for every type of discussion, and I'm sure that's how you feel about it too.

What I'm talking about is how the word stress has lost its true meaning and has become a socially acceptable way of Being.

Frankly I'm a little worried. Here is the definition of stress from my dictionary:

  1. Force that strains or deforms
  2. (verb) emphasize
  3. (noun) emphasis
  4. Physical, mental, or emotional strain.
When we ignore what our body is telling us, it begins to emphasize the strain on our physical, mental, or emotional self in an effort to convince us to take a closer look at what's going on inside. This internal system has been in place from the get-go. This is how our bodies are built to function.

Please allow me to stress the importance of this! If you don't listen to what your body is telling you, it will only talk louder. Your body will not go away and quietly amuse itself while you finish up "more important things".

If you think your kids are persistant in asking for what they want, (or if a dog or cat owns you, you know how persistant they can be when they want to go out), neither could ever win the persistence award when compared to the messages you constantly receive from your body pestering you to do something to make it feel better.

What I have learned is that the quicker I notice a symptom of stress, and the quicker I act to stop straining, the quicker I recover and feel the strength to move past the point I was when I stopped.

Since we are all on the verge of the busy holiday season - where in my humble opinion stress originated - here is a list of the symptoms of stress to refresh our collective memory.
**Physical: heart pounding, headaches, sweaty palms, indigestion, skin breaks out, shortness of breath, holding breath, cold hands, sleeplessness, sleep too much, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, tight stomach, tight muscles, pain.

Emotional: moody, irritability, depressed, anxious, lack of sense of humor, abrasive, hostile, nervous, emotional.

Mental: forgetfullness, loss of concentration,
poor judgment, disorganized, fuzzy perception, confused,
lack of interest, math errors, stop thinking, diminished, fantasy life, negative self-talk.

Surprised? How many of these symptoms are present in your body right now?

Recently I participated in a Womens Health Conference and helped my best friend Kim demonstrate what the word stress really looks like.

I acted out every one of these symptoms in response to Kim's question, "How are you?" Yep, every last one of them, and I played it up to the hilt! By the end of my tirade, 100 people were laughing, hooting, clapping and nodding their heads YES! You could feel the stress quickly evaporate in the crowded room as we realized we were all feeling the same way. It was a very powerful moment.

I propose we join forces and start forming a new type of crowd. Let's become a crowd of people who honors everyone who acts to alleviate stress in their lives, even if it throws a kink into our plans. There's always another way to get things done. If not, maybe it wasn't meant to be in the first place. If something falls short of your expectations this holiday season, try to consciously let it go. I'd be interested in knowing what happens next.

What will YOU do the next time you notice a symptom of stress in your body? If you're too stressed to think of anything,
email me and I'll brainstorm some ideas with you, no charge. We'll consider it your birthday present because I am so glad you were born!

**This symptom list is based on a compilation of information relating to stress and anxiety found in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), copyright 1994, American Psychiatric Association.

Growing a Business

Does multi-tasking lead to more stress?

Read this interesting story at
psychologytoday.com and decide for your self. Here in Plan Be Land, we have always noticed how one focused session on almost anything can create solutions for several other dilemmas with no extra work or brainpower. We call this phenomenon double duty. Try it on for size and let me know what you think.

Speaking of double duty, here is the web site of my best friend Caryn, who co-owns Service Associates Transcription, a family run business for the past 45 years.

How can a transcript help you? How often do you yearn to put your speech, teleclass presentation or group discussions into words, and just can't seem to get started? It's so frustrating. Why do your juices flow so freely when you are speaking to a group, and completely dry up when you are alone with a pen in your hand?

Setting up a way to capture the impromptu creativity, which is the essence of you at your best, while you are in the flow of your most comfortable mode of expression is an excellent example of the Plan Be way of double duty. Then, when it's time to write your book, course, article and press releases, you can refer to an actual transcript of your own stream of consciousness to easily tap into your flow. If this sounds like the perfect way for you to begin sharing your brilliance with a wider audience, give Caryn a call at 212-244-6313

Wisemama Way

I have recently signed up play myself, the Queen of Plan Be, on a fairly new web site called
QueenPower.com hosted by my new best friend Allyn. The details of my duties are still evolving, but what I do know is I will serve as the resident Career/Life Coach. Stay tuned, visit Allyn's site if you can, I'm sure there will be much more to come.

Q: Should I have a baby after 35?
A: No, 35 children is enough.

Q:I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
A: With any luck, right after he finishes college.

Q: What is the most reliable method to determine whether a baby will be a boy or a girl?
A: Childbirth.

Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she's borderline irrational.
A: So what's your question?

Q: My childbirth instructor says it's not pain I'll feel during labor, but pressure. Is she right?
A: Yes, in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current.

Q: When is the best time to get an epidural?
A: Right after you find out you're pregnant.

Books I Love

How Full Is Your Bucket?: Positive Strategies for Work and Life - Tom Rath & Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D.

This book is a gem in expressing how every personal interaction is an opportunity to either fill up - or empty - our sense of belonging and our natural urge make a valuable contribution to future generations.

Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation - Lynne Truss

This is an amusing book told from the perspective of someone who is obsessive about punctuation. I have to admit I saw myself in some of her rantings, and not only in the examples of mistakes she offered. I often dwell in the obsession cave of spelling and punctuation perfection too.

I write from flow (at least this is the closest I can come to describing what writing feels like to me), and as most of you know by now, I also have a thing about following rules to the exact letter. Meaning I adjust any rule that produces stress symptoms in my body.

Here's a glimpse of what goes on inside me: My true self says something like, "I don't want simple punctuation errors to distract from my brilliant prose. I want to check it one more time."

Then my other true self says something like, "I want my missives to be fun AND offer something of value for people to read. I think you need to make it sound less stuffy." See what I mean? With all this internal cross talk, how would anyone be able to get anything done?

Resolving this standoff takes often takes the intervention of yet another part of my true self, "It's the getting it out that counts you guys! So stop bickering and let Diane press the send button already!

I'm grateful I have such a supportive group of true selves within me. Even if it does feel a little crowded some days. One thing I CAN tell you , is you will always be able to count on me to be "perfect in my imperfection." Especially where I cross paths with the written word. Check out this book for a fun and valuable read.
