***NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING***


CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH (October 4, 2007) – NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the following meeting will take place:

Regular Meeting of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission

As a continued effort to hold its regular meetings across the state, The Ohio Civil Rights Commission will hold its regular meeting in the city of Cleveland Heights.

On Thursday, October 4th, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the OCRC will hold its regular public meeting at the Council Chambers of Cleveland Heights City Hall. At this meeting, OCRC Commissioners will hear and rule on cases of discrimination, providing residents of the Cleveland Heights area with the opportunity to see how the principal civil rights agency in the state of Ohio carries out its statutory duties. As with all OCRC meetings, this meeting is free and open to the public. The meeting will take place at Cleveland Heights Council Chambers, City Hall, 40 Severance Circle, Cleveland Heights, OH. Toni A. Delgado, Director of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement for the Commission stated, "It is important for us to hold our meetings throughout the state not only to provide outreach and raise awareness on civil rights but also to be accessible to members of the community who don't always have the opportunity to participate in our meetings."

Executive Director G. Michael Payton, Chair Barbara A. Sykes, Commissioners Leonard J. Hubert, Grace Ramos, Pastor Aaron Wheeler, Sr. and Rashmi Yajnik will be in attendance and will be available to grant personal interviews.

At this meeting, OCRC Commissioners will hear arguments from parties of discrimination complaints and investigations as well as rule on cases that have undergone investigation in one of the agency's six regional offices.

The parties in the following cases will appear in person before the Commissioners:


  • Louis A. Telerico v. Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Incorporated (Cleveland)
    Mr. Telerico alleges that he was discharged from his employment on the basis of his age, 63.

  • Robert Boyle, I v. Buckeye Community Three LP, Pleasant Meadows Village, RLJ Management Co., Daniel Slane & Slane Company, and Douglas E. Weatherby, AIA & D.E. Weatherby and Associates, Inc. (Akron)
    Mr. Boyle asserts that the Respondents designed and constructed multifamily dwellings and common use areas that are not in compliance with the law governing the design and construction of accessible housing for persons with disabilities.

  • Joseph G. McLaughlin v. City of East Cleveland (Cleveland)
    Mr. McLaughlin alleges that he was discharged from his employment on the basis of race, Caucasian, and retaliation.

  • Rashid and Ernestine Khawaja v. Lenny Vaccaro, Maribeth Iosue, Janet Horvath and Howard Hanna Smythe Cramer (Cleveland)
    Rashid Khawaja, Asian Pakistani, and Ernestine Khawaja, African-American, allege that the Respondents refused to sell a property to them on the basis of race, color, and national origin

  • Irene Lear v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (Dayton)
    Ms. Lear alleges that she was discharged from her employment on the basis of her race, Caucasian, sex, female, and her age, 41.
