FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCRC JOINS IN FIGHT AGAINST PREDATORY LENDING
COLUMBUS, OH (November 8, 2007) – Today, Executive Director G. Michael Payton joined Governor Ted Strickland, Attorney General Marc Dann, Chief Justice Tom Moyer, and Department of Commerce Director Kimberly Zurz in a press conference to
address the issue of foreclosure prevention.
While mainly a consumer issue affecting an inordinate amount of residents in Ohio, predatory lending is also a civil rights issue because of marketing practices that target minority communities. "For some time, it has been well known that
predatory lending practices disproportionately affect minority groups," said OCRC Chair Barbara A. Sykes. "We commend Governor Strickland, the Attorney General and the Department of Commerce for their effort to proactively address this
vexing problem."
Executive Director G. Michael Payton stated, "We will stand fast and vigilant in working collaboratively with Marc Dann and the Department of Commerce in educating our citizens about how to identify and avoid these practices while also
investigating and litigating these cases where appropriate in coordination with Marc Dann's office."
