A Four Generation Legacy - Helfrich River Outfitters
Many outfitters count their own family as their most valuable asset, but not every company can claim four
generations in the business. For 66 years
Helfrich River Outfitters has been synonymous with outfitting on Northwest rivers. Family patriarch Prince Helfrich started in the business at the tender age of five, working on Oregon's MacKenzie River and eventually running the
Deschutes, Metolius, Crooked and Rogue Rivers in the 1930s. Says son Dave, "Access was tough, and it wasn't easy to travel. But it was a way to earn a living back then. They used a wooden boat they had to build themselves."
An outdoorsman through and through, Prince worked as a trapper in winter and as a guide in the summer until World War II, when he switched his focus to logging. Eventually going back to his first love, Prince was known as the "Gentleman
Guide," counting Dean Witter and the president of Levi Strauss among his clients.
Also feeling the pull of the river, Prince's son Dave joined the family business. Dave's sons Ken and Dean followed in the family trade. The fourth generation of Helfrich outfitters includes Ken's daughter Kelsey and two of Dean's
sons.
Kelsey, now almost 21 and a student at Oregon State University, says she began doing day trips when she was four or five, and started guiding at 15 or 16. And although she is busy with school, she still makes time for the family business:
"My dad gave me a love of the river and it stuck. I guide on the Middle Fork in the summer and the Main Salmon and the Rogue in the fall."
Ken, too, has always loved the business, buying his Dad's business in 2001 to continue the family legacy of providing professional guide service in Oregon and Idaho. He explains, "Whether you schedule a one-day fishing trip or a five-day
wilderness adventure, your trip will be organized and delivered with the same first class service. Every detail is attended to so you can relax and enjoy the river. It's a far cry from fur blankets on the ground!"

Idaho Outfitting Family Helps At-Risk Kids
Family owned and operated since 1969,
Deadwood Outfitters maintains a strong commitment to both its guests and its community. For the past six years, owners Tom and Dawn Carter have worked year-round with the Boise Police Department to place high-risk kids ages nine
to 15 in a four-day backcountry mentoring program. Says Dawn, "These kids have stories that will rip your heart out. Many have older siblings or parents that have been in trouble. This program helps keep these kids on the right track."
The Carters welcome two to three groups each summer, and last year launched a new program: Junior SWAT Team Boot Camp
for boys 13 to 17 who are looking for a career in law enforcement or the military. Previously, they hosted a mentoring program for gang members from South Central Los Angeles for two years.
Dawn says that although their funding is at risk because of insurance issues, they are hopeful that they can continue the program in the future: "It gives kids the opportunity to turn their lives around."
