Celebrations of mothers and mothering date back to ancient Greece and Rome. Our modern holiday has its origins back to the Civil War and culminated in President Woodrow Wilson signing a bill in 1914 recognizing the second Sunday in May as the national holiday of Mother's Day.

In Wilson's day inexpensive amateur cameras were available to many. Mothers and their Mother's Day memories were easily and inexpensively captured on film. Would he appreciate how we have extended that, using today's technology to stay connected to the moms, grandmoms, step-moms, godmothers and mothers-in-law of the modern family?

I think he'd be pleased to share a dotPhoto album of Mother's Day memories with anyone on the Internet. Or use his cell phone camera to capture a still image and upload it to his dotPhoto account to create a deck of Photo Playing Cards as a gift. Certainly he would have marvelled that he could create a Mother's Day keepsake photo Yearbook of his days at Princeton and have it shipped right to the White House in time for Sunday dinner. Cherie Layton's father was an avid photographer and interested her in the hobby at an early age. Her interest was renewed a few years ago when she began photographing the birds in her back yard -- particularly Bluebirds. She says, "I'd never seen a Bluebird in my life until five years ago, and when I saw one for the first time, it was love at first sight!" She began combing the Internet for information on how to attract and care for these beautiful birds. Cherie is a member of the New York State Bluebird Society and is the Cayuga County Coordinator for that organization.
