Don't Believe Everything You Think

You probably remember the old saying, "Don't believe everything you see" referring to the fact that our eyes can deceive us. Well it is also wise not to believe everything you think, because guess what? our minds can also deceive us.

Every day we have approximately 50,000 thoughts go through our heads, the vast majority of which are based on core beliefs we developed before the age of eight. I don't know about you, but I didn't have anyone helping me to interpret the world objectively when I was that young therefore, a good portion of my habitual thinking is distorted.

The internal reality that we create in our lives as a result of this habitual, distorted thinking for all intents and purposes is our reality. It is the world we create and carry around with us 24/7.

If you're not happy with that reality, the best way to change it is to change the way you think. To do this we have to start paying attention to what we're thinking, become an observer of our inner reality and then start making choices about how we want to interpret the situations and experiences in our lives. In the beginning, it might be a good idea to get help with this as it's hard at first to determine on our own what is distorted and what is realistic. A good book for further exploration is Practicing the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

SAD

Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD is a type of depression that occurs during the months in which the days are shorter and there is less sun due to cloud cover and rain. Research indicates that there may be a connection with the optic nerve and that with this condition, a person is producing too much melatonin, which is the hormone we produce at night that helps us sleep.

The symptoms are similar to those of major depression including feeling sad, blue or 'down in the dumps', no longer enjoying things you used to enjoy and can affect a person's abilities and habits in almost all areas of life.

The good news is that there is a treatment available that is not medication. In addition to exercise, which is considered to be as effective if not more effective than medication, light therapy is recommended.

I have tried this myself and I have noticed that it makes a difference to place the lamp at approximately eye level in my peripheral vision. Without looking directly at it, I conduct my activities in proximity to the light as normal for about 15-20 minutes each morning.

Once the weather clears up and the days are longer, most people with SAD can stop using the light. Be aware that if you have other types of depression rather than SAD, light therapy may not help. The only way to know for sure is to try it.

I work individually with people who are striving to achieve inner peace and contentment. Please contact me to set up a complimentary 30 minute session to see if Spiritual Counseling and Coaching is right for you or go to my website: www.TheEvolvingSelf.com
