We are of Two Minds |
|
It often seems that there is a split between what I think logically about a situation and what I feel about it. Especially in situations where I've been triggered into anger, resentment and hurt. I can say to myself,
"that person did the best they can" and the logical thinking part of me totally agrees. However, the feeling side of me doesn't care that people do the best they can or that they are unconscious of their behavior and it's effect on others,
it just knows that it hurts. My intellect can talk until its blue in the face but my feeling side will not let go of it's position. Can anyone relate to this?
Well, it turns out, I'm not crazy. There are two distinctly different orientations in our brains that see any situation very differently. It is simply that the two hemispheres of our brains use distinctly different languages to
communicate. The left brain houses the intellect and the ego and utilizes verbal language and processes things logically and linearly using data, analysis and reasoning. The right brain on the other hand houses intuition and emotion and
utilizes the language of imagery and symbolism and processes things using emotion and sensations.
Having grown up in a family that was very left brain dominated, I'm pleased and delighted to be discovering the capabilities, talents and gifts of my right brain, but it all starts with honoring and acknowledging my emotions. When I do
this, I can then be of one mind again!

Tip #4: Pay Yourself First: If you find yourself procrastinating, putting off a new behavior to later in the day or another day (this may be resistance), learn to pay yourself first. Schedule time on your calendar and protect it
like your life depended on it (maybe it does). Review your schedule and plan a time that will work for you, then set an alarm to remind yourself.

Book Review: My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor |
|
This is an amazing book, written by a neuroanatomist who had a stroke and later was able to describe moment by moment the experience of losing the functions of the left hemisphere of her brain as it was happening.
The experience Jill Bolte Taylor had of losing much of the functionality of her left brain, forced her to utilize the functionality of her right brain in a way she might never have done had the stroke not happened.
Her experience helps to clarify and raise to awareness the importance of deliberately utilizing right brain functionality to enhance our lives and find more peace and serenity.
Jill has also been speaking publicly about her experience. Here is a lecture I consider to be one of the most inspirational I have ever seen. I highly recommend watching it and reading the book.
