The Ego and Relationships |
|
It occurs to me that if it weren't for the human ego, there would be very little conflict in our relationships. It is the ego that is responsible for the 'reaction' we feel when someone directs criticism towards us.
It is the ego that is responsible for our thoughts of judgment, resentment, and blame and it is the ego that is responsible for all the negative thoughts we direct towards ourselves and others. Now you might be thinking, "well, let's just
put a stop to the ego, rip it out." But of course, that reaction is yet another manifestation of the ego.
In his book,
A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle says the issue with the ego is that we make an identity out of it by believing the voice inside our heads. In addition, our ego assigns the same kind of identity to those around us and therefore we begin to
view others as potential enemies who must be attacked or at least defended against.
According to Tolle, to defeat the ego, we must start by simply being aware of it. He says, "The moment you become aware of the ego in you, it is strictly speaking no longer the ego, but just an old, conditioned mind-pattern."
Just as Tolle teaches, I am a great proponent of becoming an observer of ourselves. I believe that simply observing our feelings, behaviors and especially our thoughts frees us from conditioning and the control of the ego to then make
intentional and deliberate, conscious choices that are in our best interests.
When we do this, it contributes to more harmonious relationships by diverting our attention away from making our partner wrong and placing it on how we can grow as an individual in the context of the relationship.
If this is a subject that interests you, I would encourage you to consider the upcoming class,
Relationship Skills for Individuals. In addition, as a Spiritual Counselor and Life Coach, I work with individuals one-on-one to help them develop healthy communication habits, self-love, and to uncover the unconscious beliefs that are
preventing them from living a life they love and enjoy. For more information, see my website

Not Just for Ladies Only |
|
It is sad but true, that our current healthcare system disempowers and disconnects people from their inner wisdom. We are encouraged to go to our doctors to have them tell us what is going on in our own bodies. This
may be because of a common belief that "the intellect is superior to and entirely separate from ....the body."
I don't mean to belittle the great advances that have taken place in science with technology and medicines, however when it comes to our bodies, we are the experts, we live in our bodies 24/7. The recent surge of interest in the mind/body
connection is actually a revisiting of something that has been known for thousands of years; that the body is a reflection of the mind.
The very first sentence of Christiane Northrup's book,
Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom is " Consciousness creates the body, pure and simple." This statement begins an indepth exploration of just exactly what it means to be conscious relative to our bodies and how this lays the
foundation for being physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually healthy.
It is my honor and great pleasure to be in a position, using Northrup's book, to participate in activities that are all about learning and growing both for myself and for others. Currently, that means I get to facilitate the new
"Mindfulness and Women's Health" support group at Kaiser.
We will be exploring the whole idea of consciousness relative to health and what it takes to establish an on-going connection for you personally between your mind and body.
For the guys who are feeling left out right now...while I don't have a class for you, I can at least offer you a book on the subject, check out
Mind/Body Health: The Effects of Attitudes, Emotions, and Relationships
In addition, I work individually with people who are seeking to connect with their inner wisdom. Please
contact me to set up a complimentary 30 minute session to see if Spiritual Counseling and Coaching is right for you or go to my website:
