Narcissism, Why Should I Care?

I have been teaching Assertiveness now for over 20 years. In nearly every class I teach, the subject of narcissism comes up. Why would that be, how are they related and what the heck is narcissism anyway?

People take a class on assertiveness because for whatever reason they never learned to stand up for themselves and in many cases were punished for doing so. They experience a great deal of anxiety when conflict arises in their close relationships and they often modify and distort themselves to be pleasing to others. The interesting thing is that people who are very passive, tend to be surrounded by...guess what? Narcissists. "If you go through life acting like a doormat, you're going to attract a lot of muddy boots."

Ok, so what exactly is narcissism? "Narcissism is a pattern of traits and behaviors which signify infatuation and obsession with one's self to the exclusion of all others and the egotistic and ruthless pursuit of one's gratification, dominance and ambition." That's quite a mouthful, and it all sounds very psychological, but why should I care?

This is why you should care...because narcissism in the U.S. is a rapidly growing epidemic. The latest research indicates that narcissism is growing at the same rate as obesity in the U.S. That means that at home, in families, intimate relationships, friendships, work, school, interacting with the general public, chances are you are going to be interacting with a narcissistic person at some point. To deal with anything effectively, we need to know what we're up against.

If you suspect you may have narcissistic people in your life, I would encourage you to consider my upcoming seminar Narcissism in the 21st Century: A Call to Consciousness Wednesday, January 13, 2010 6:00-9:00 PM, I am covering all the basics of what narcissism is and how to deal with.

The Call to Consciousness

There are very few people in the world who are more unconscious than narcissists. It's not that they don't know other people exist, it's just that their own needs are the only ones that are real to them. Because of this they tend to engender a sense of injustice and outrage in the people around them.

Eckhart Tolle says that whenever we react to another person's unconscious behavior with negativity, resistance or anger, then we too have fallen into unconsciousness. One of the most challenging experiences life offers is to overcome our unconscious conditioning and make conscious choices about how we respond rather than react to the behavior of those around us. That includes narcissism.

As the rate of narcissism increases around us, we each have an opportunity to learn a different way of being in the world. Rather than taking truly inappropriate, unfair, and selfish behavior on the part of others as a personal affront, we can learn to stay calm and respond maturely and with intention. We can't make a narcissistic person change, but we can change the way we respond to them.

I am, of course covering this in the upcoming seminar, Narcissism in the 21st Century: A Call to Consciousness Wednesday, January 13, 2010 6:00-9:00 PM, in addition, if you are interested in raising your level of consciousness and making intentional and deliberate choices, you may want to consider Spiritual Counseling and/or Coaching. I'm offering a Holiday Special continuing through February. Click here for more details or email me to set up a complementary 1/2 hour consultation.
