What Are You Thinking About?

"You can live 90 years or you can live one year 90 times". I couldn't find the author of this profound statement, but that doesn't make it any less profound. It says to me that most people live on autopilot. We move through our days and nights focusing on what's in front of us. We go to work, we eat meals, we interact with our families, we sleep and hopefully we play a little as well. We often do a lot of the same things over and over, and it turns out we also think a lot of the same things over and over.

A study was done at the University of Cleveland in which they determined that 97% of the thoughts the typical person had today, they also had yesterday and will also have tomorrow. When I first heard this, I made a list of everything I had been thinking about. Then I thought, yuk! Is this how I want to spend my life?"

The bigger truth this reveals is that each person lives in a world of their own making, constructed by what they focus on in their daily lives. Many people live in either the past or the future (or both), ruminating over the past or worrying about the future. Whatever we focus on creates our reality. The world we move through every day of our lives.

As dreadful as it was to be really conscious of what had been going through my head, it was also a wake-up call. I began to pay more attention to what I was thinking and to make deliberate decisions to think more positive, uplifting thoughts. It also motivated me to look at what I'd been holding on to and to take action to clear out my luggage of unresolved issues. Finally, it caused me to consider that I have a choice about what I focus on and that as Louis Hay says, "The greatest point of power is in the present moment."

When I'm so busy with all this stuff going on in my head, I miss what's right in front of me and in the present moment, life is actually pretty good. There is beauty, there is life, there is love and that is what I really want to be focusing on in my life.

I work with individuals one-on-one to help them develop healthy thinking, self-love, and to uncover the unconscious beliefs that are preventing them from living a life they love and enjoy. Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

There has been much in the local media of late regarding the passing of Steve Jobs. As a result, I have learned more about the man than I knew when he was living. In retrospect, I find myself feeling saddened by his passing and very inspired by his legacy.

Steve Jobs really typified the entrepreneurial spirit of the Silicon Valley that was behind so many of the technological advances we enjoy today. It is this spirit, this drive to create I believe Steve was trying to express when during his now famous commencement address at Stanford, he referenced the the last Whole Earth Catalog from the mid-1970's, which said, "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish." This brief 'slogan' captures the spirit of creativity that I believe exists in all of us, but for many was left behind with childhood.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to get in touch with what I call my bodacious inner child. It was an amazing experience of re-awakening a part of me that I had literally forgotten existed. While I still have moments when I forget it's there, when I get in touch with this part of me, I start to play. And of all the things we could benefit from retaining from childhood, the ability to play would be on the top of the list.

For me, this idea of retaining the ability to play in the midst of our work is somehow intermingled with all the rest of what we received from Steve Jobs. Through the many incredible innovative products he envisioned, in work, in music, in interactions with others, we get to play. Thank you, Steve!

I work individually with people who are attempting to remember parts of themselves they left in the past and to live a more peaceful presence.
