Jason Vieaux premieres Visconti, Carducci Quartet receives RPS Award, Monique Lapins joins New Zealand Quartet

Jason Vieaux “played with terrific commitment” says the San Jose Mercury News about Jason’s premiere of Dan Visconti’s new guitar concerto Living Language. “The Grammy-winning artist brought fluidity to the score's fleet passagework and focus to the slow, reflective episodes.” Music Director Donato Cabrera lead the California Symphony in the premiere performances, about which the San Francisco Classical Voice cited Jason's "excellent performance throughout" and noted that "Visconti was aiming for a tour of world music...pleasurable and satisfying." "And the winner is..."  The Carducci Quartet is the recipient of the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Chamber Music for its remarkable Shostakovich15 project. Just after the awards, Gramophone Magazine’s Editor’s Choice picked the Carducci Quartet’s new Bruce/Brahms clarinet quintet CD (with Julian Bliss) calling it a “double delight”. “First, an engaging new work which deserves a place in the chamber repertory; second, a passionate account of Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet”. The quartet is now immersed in the chamber music of Schubert. They sold out four concerts at the Cheltenham International Music Festival last week and released the Schubert Octet – with Emma Johnson and friends – on the SOMM label. Read more...

Following a months-long international search: Monique Lapins has been named the new 2nd violinist of the New Zealand String Quartet. Monique is a perfect fit for the quartet's embrace of Classical/Romantic/Contemporary/New Zealand repertoire mix. Currently on tour -- UK/US/Canada - that mix includes NZ composers Gareth Farr and Ross Harris, as well as Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak and Smetana. (See upcoming concerts, below).
