1. May Wind is Busy: Poetry in the Lives of Children

May Wind is Busy
May wind is busy
Brushing the robin’s tail.
Combing the willow tree,
And whispering to my ear —
That summer is near.
Kazue Mizumura

Give children the most exquisite language we speak poetry to memorize and recite and carry on the walls of their mind. Greet them at the door with a short poem of some delight and recite it throughout the week, pausing and letting them supply the word or last line. Ask the children to come up with actions to dramatically accompany the language. Then invite them to practice reciting and miming the poem line-by-line after you until the entire poem is known by heart. Poetry makes any meaningful class study richer in imagery and language.

The more children memorize poems, songs, rhymes and story excerpts, the more their capacity for memorizing will grow. And in the words of Robert Frost, “... pretty things, well-said, it’s nice to have them in your head.”

For poems, ideas and inspiration see our photo essay: How to Use Poetry (I Can Read) Notebooks and Seminar Language Charts.

2. Excellence in Kindergarten and Early Literacy

Once again I have revisited and refined my essay on Defining Excellence in Kindergarten and Early Literacy. This is my reflection on how accomplished teachers celebrate language, honor childhood, and accelerate literacy. As we move toward all-day kindergartens, we hope this is a definition of excellence that teachers can relate to. Your thoughtful input is always appreciated. info@nellieedge.com.

In my June 27th seminar Celebrate Language and Accelerate Literacy: Higher Standards • Joyful Learning • Proven Strategies I will highlight the best practices I have observed from exemplary Northwest kindergartens strategies that can be duplicated in any kindergarten (preschool or first-grade) with amazing results. Celebrate Language and Accelerate Literacy Seminar Flier (pdf format). Remember to register early for special savings. The seminar resource book will be printed with many full-color pages.

3. Bilingual Teachers Bridge English and Spanish with Sign Language

Our bilingual colleagues, especially Margo Hampton and Marissa Zamora, were instrumental in helping us understand the power for using American Sign Language as a bridge to comprehension between the English and Spanish version of our most predictable Read and Sing Big Books. These songs then formed the content of our original signing seminar, which we are repeating (just once) for the first time since 1999. August 1st is the date for the Original Maximizing Language and Literacy Through the Magic of Signing Songs seminar. This small “living room seminar” in Salem, Oregon is limited to 17 participants and includes the following songs:

Goodnight Irene (Buenas Noches Irene)
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear (Osito, Osito)
I Have A Cat (Yo Tengo Un Gato)
I Can Read Colors (Se Leer Colores)
I Love the Mountains (Amo Los Montes)
The Opposite Song (La Canción de Opuestos)
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star
Happy Birthday
You Are My Sunshine
May There Always Be Sunshine
I Think You’re Wonderful

4. Kid Writing is Highlighted in New Resource Book

We are excited to read J. Richard Gentry’s new book Breaking the Code: The New Science of Teaching Beginning Reading and Writing, Heinemann, 2006. It gives us an even greater appreciation for the Kid Writing book and the powerful Writing to Read curriculum many of our kindergarten colleagues have developed.

Excerpts from Breaking the Code: The New Science of Teaching Beginning Reading and Writing.
“Adult underwriting is the corrected version of the child’s writing, but as Eileen Feldgus would say, it’s done “in a praise mode.” I recommend writing the adult version at the bottom of the page below the full version of the child’s writing as opposed to writing the adult version directly under each child’s word, to keep the integrity of the child’s version intact.

“Read the kid writing.” Then the teacher prompts by saying, “Now try the adult writing” and offers encouragement such as “Wow, you are such a good reader!”

When teachers use the terms kid writing and adult writing sensitively, they convey to children that children aren’t expected to write like adults and give them confidence to do productions in “kid spelling.”

5. End-of-the-Year Rituals

Susan Ventura and Mitzi Shirk’s kindergartners in Eugene, Oregon are busy hand painting wings this month for the end-of-the-year Kindergarten Fly Away Celebration. Parent volunteers trace and cut out a set of wings from railroad board for each child. “After the children paint their wings with bright colors and designs (and sometimes feathers and glitter) we attach two elastic straps to hold these on their arms. On our last day of school families are invited for an informal picnic lunch and popsicle event which concludes with the children donning their wings and “flying away” from kindergarten. Children love the effect of flying in their wings down the sloping hills and meadow areas at the edge of the school woods!” Susan writes.
Families watch and applaud at the bottom of the hill as their joyful child comes floating up and down again and again. What a lovely, symbolic way to bring closure to a joyful kindergarten year.

Appropriate music for “The Fly Away:”
  • I Believe I Can Fly (chorus) by R. Kelly Lyrics from the soundtrack for the movie Space Jam
  • See Me Beautiful by Red Grammer
  • What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
