Cooler Tips #47 - Get Your Emails Opened |
Grab your readers' attention quick!
Hello CoolerEmail Subscriber!
In the last issue of Cooler Tips, we talked about laying out your email on the screen so that it's more likely to get read. But you've got to get them into your email to read it. Right? That's the goal of this month's issue.
You know when you're surfing through the channels to see what's on TV? What is it that makes you stop on a channel? Chances are it's not some long-winded discussion about some product's features. It's generally just a phrase or sound byte
that catches your attention.
Email is very similar. There's so much noise that you've got to compete with coming into your readers' inbox. They're sitting there scanning though their messages with their finger on the trigger. You're not going to get a second chance to
get their attention. Your subject line needs to pop out and grab them.
Here are a few tips on how to do that:
Less words. Get your point across fast. Stick to 6 to 10 words.
Think simple. Ditch the jargon and use words everybody knows and understands.
Keep it short. Stick with one to two syllable words. Long words take time to read.
Make it big. Use a Sans Serif font, like Arial or Helvetica, and make it big and bold. The point is to make it easy to read.
Benefits. Yes, you've got great features but save them for the body copy or even a link to your website. Save you prime subject-line real estate to answer the eternal question: "What's in it for me?"
Here's a few examples of winning subject lines:
Connect Before Savings Cutoff!
Spam filters will sort out a dollar or percentage amount so that's out as a way to create interest. But discounts and deadlines are great ways of creating interest and immediacy. This subject line is for wireless services. It's short and
has some punch. There's plenty of room in the body to describe what's going on once the reader opens the email.
Crash Course: Growth Opportunities for Post Dot-Com Marketing
This is a little long for a subject line but it's a winner for two reasons. It starts right off by announcing that there's not much time commitment. It then follows up with a major benefit that the reader is looking for. They're going to
open this email for sure.
Strategic Analysis CD Reserved for You
Spam filters dump anything that says 'free' or 'complimentary' - and nothing looks more unprofessional than the common ploys to foil the filters like 'f*ree' or 'fr ee'. But this is a good way to get through the clutter. Make sure that
it's something that your readers will find of value.
CEOs Share Top 4 Concerns (& Solutions)
This is a great subject line to pique the interest in those in similar positions (or those who want to be).
Top 5 Reasons to (what ever)
This is simple and to the point, isn't it? Everyone's got time to read 5 reasons. Some experts say that lists of 10 are good, but I think that even that much may be overwhelming for the time challenged.
Now that you've got the idea, try it out on your next email campaign and see what happens.

CoolerEmail, in collaboration with Digital Logistics Group, is proud to announce the initial release of its PDA plug-in - a first among opt-in e-mail marketing service
companies! This service allows CoolerEmail users to actively check the status of mailing campaigns, and to access detailed customer records and tracking stats.
The initial release has been designed for and tested on PocketPC platforms running Windows Mobile 2002 software and above (including Pocket Internet Explorer). Follow-on testing will be performed on PalmOS devices using NetFront, Web Pro,

service.
CoolerEmail users will find this service extremely useful, user-friendly and easy to navigate.
