The Road to Bountiful
Big Bowl's Summer Harvest Celebration puts locally grown corn, Chinese eggplant,
tomatoes and watermelon on a special menu but for just a short precious time
(Chicago, Minneapolis, Reston, VA., Aug. 3, 2010) - Big Bowl captures the essence of the season throughout August with summer harvest specials featuring locally grown corn, Chinese eggplant, tomatoes and watermelon.
Beginning Aug. 5, the Summer Harvest Celebration menu will be available at all locations. Executive Chef Marc Bernard expects the specials to last until Sept. 9, but the date might fluctuate by location because the seasonal ingredients are
from local farms.
To start, diners can order Spicy Sichuan Eggplant, an appetizer of locally grown Chines eggplant sauteed with sunburst tomatoes, Sichuan chili sauce and the refreshing summer herbs of Chinese parsley, basil and scallions.
Because the Midwest grows some of the best corn in the country, three of the specials celebrate the height of the vegetable's season.
Fresh crabmeat and corn come together in a soup made with a shrimp broth, coconut milk, lemongrass and Thai basil while Thai Summer Corn with Chicken features naturally raised chicken sauteed with local corn and fresh water chestnuts in a
spicy Thai lemon sauce.
For dessert in Chicago, corn will be made into a gelato by Pastry Chef Jessica Oloroso of Black Dog Gelato. Oloroso, who recently opened her shop in Chicago's Ukrainian Village, has created desserts in the past for Big Bowl. The beloved,
Minneapolis-based Sonny's Ice Cream will make the gelato for the three locations in Minnesota, while Virginia-based Gifford's Ice Cream will prepare the frozen confection for Reston, VA. The sweet corn gelato will be served with a
blueberry compote.
To drink, the Harvest Celebration brings watermelon for sangria that will be made fresh daily in-house.
