ONE MINUTE UPDATE March 1, 2010

Volunteer

Housefires. Floods. Cardiac arrest.

Our hope is that Oregonians never have to experience any of these emergency situations. But the reality is that, every day, many of them do.

And every day, the Oregon Red Cross is there to help. In the last year, we got more than 600 families back on their feet after a disaster and trained more than 122,000 Oregonians in the skills to save a life. And now we're giving you the chance to experience the work of the Oregon Red Cross...no disaster required.

On Tuesday, March 9, feel our impact firsthand with The Red Cross Experience, a free interactive exhibit following the 2010 Breakfast of Champions.

You will:
• See a golf course, where golfers jump into action to administer CPR and save the life of a friend.
• Pass by a housefire, where victims stand outside with only the warmth of Red Cross blankets.
• Experience a disaster shelter, where survivors receive a hot meal and other much needed support.
• Tour a bloodmobile, where every day, your blood donations save lives.

We hope you'll join us for this firsthand look at the important work of the Oregon Red Cross. The Red Cross Experience is a one-day only event -- don't miss it!

Chihuahuas to CPR, Meet Oregon's 2010 Heroes

HeroWhether you're hiking a trail, hard at work or heading to the gym, you never know when disaster may strike.

Three Oregon heroes – Steve Revier, Brian Miskimins and Sean Cusack – knew just what to do in case of emergency. They jumped into action, using their skills and smarts to save lives. And while Jack the Chihuahua had no formal training, his barking definitely made the difference in an apartment fire.

Celebrate Red Cross Month in March

Breakfast of ChampionsWith March proclaimed as Red Cross Month, the Oregon Trail Chapter thanks our supporters and volunteers whose efforts enable us to respond to disasters down the street, across the country and around the world.

"The Red Cross works tirelessly to be there with help and hope when people need it most, and we are grateful for the public support that allows us to continue our work here at home and abroad," said Oregon Regional Executive Maree Wacker.

This March, get involved by donating blood; signing up for a CPR or first aid class; giving a financial gift that can save the day when disaster strikes; or becoming a volunteer.
