Give Yourself A Gift - A Career You're Truly Passionate About

Today people are seeking more meaning in their life, especially from their work. Whether they had lost a job, or grown tired or unchallenged, so many clients said, ?I want something more.?

The greatest career advice I can offer is really a gift you must give to yourself ? a career or business you are passionate about. Most people will put in 11,000 workdays over their lifetime, and nothing will improve your life like having a job you love. And, if truth be told, it?s rarely money that?s a motivating factor. I left a prestigious university position as Director of Counseling Services to open my career counseling and seminar business over 10 years ago. I worked harder than ever, clocking 80 hour work weeks to make a go of a business most people said I?d fail in. ?No one is making it in the career business,? I was told. My motivation was simple ? to help people find jobs and more personal satisfaction from their careers. It?s what I love to do ? it?s rewarding, fulfilling and I achieved success beyond my wildest dreams.

But life always changes. For me, giving birth to my only child five years ago was a biggie. Now I put in 35-40 hours a week. I do exactly what I love -- writing, counseling clients and doing some speeches. Blending my professional passion plus being an active parent raising my son is the formula for a perfectly happy life for me.

You, too, can reinvent your life and your career, achieving whatever your heart dreams of. But "HOW?" you think! The economy is lousy, there are no jobs, look at how long so & so has been unemployed. You can get very depressed very fast if you let negative thinking guide you. For 2004, I suggest you implement a ?can-do? proactive approach. Here?s how:

? Build your career on your strengths. You were born with natural talents. Assess what they are. Develop and excel in using your strengths. Make this your goal for this year.

? Get expert help. Don?t guess how to approach your career change. Go to the experts. Read books, use tapes and CD resources, invest in career counseling ? enact the most effective steps available so you can achieve your goal faster.

? Dreams + Actions = Happy Results

Here are some success stories from Robin Ryan's newest book, What to Do with the Rest of Your Life.

For Peggy Kowalik, the path was round about. In high school, she loved art and had a natural talent for it. Encouraged to train for a more practical career, she went into hospital social work after college. But her passion for art did not diminish, so in her early 30?s, while working full time and raising two boys, Peggy began the long process of going back to college for another degree, this time in graphic arts. Upon graduation she left the hospital and followed her dream. Drawing on her previous management skills, Peggy soon became the Director of Publications for a prestigious college and ?loving every minute of it,? she says.

People find excuses for not making their dreams come true. Not so with Stina Cowan, who moved to Seattle from Sweden. Formerly a teacher in Brussels for a Swedish school, Cowan was disappointed that Seattle had no such school here, so she started one. Just six months later, 24 kids were attending the new school for two hours of weekly instruction in Swedish language, history, geography and culture, with all classes taught in Swedish.

Robin Wes's dream began 24 years ago. A Physical Education teacher with a love of music, people said ?You?re crazy,? when he talked about a place where toddlers, preschoolers and elementary kids would go for classes of physical education taught cleverly with music. Says Wes, ?When you have a strong vision to propel you; well that?s how people reach goals.? Wes?s business, The Little Gym, did well. Today Little Gyms now entertain and exercise thousands of young children every day. Wes has franchises for over 100 Little Gyms in the United States with several more in Europe and Asia.

It?s living your passion that?ll make the difference for you in 2004.
