Some Code by Any Other Name: Harmonized Tariff System Revisions and How It May Affect Your Export Business

The Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) is a universal classification system for products used by customs authorities worldwide to classify goods for calculating tariff rates, determining whether a product qualifies for a preferential tariff under a Free Trade Agreement and most importantly, filing accurately shipping documentation which allows goods to flow smoothly internationally. Recent revisions to the HTS will take effect early this year and categories covering software and high-tech hardware will be affected. Companies should review the new changes carefully to assure that products are not impacted by the transition or by documentation errors that will result in penalties.
